Trade Target: Cleveland

Given the news about Brantley's shoulder surgery, the Indians look like a perfect landing spot for Maybin. They'd prefer not to get into the high or even middle-end of the OF dollar market if they don't have to since they've got Zimmer and Frazier coming. That said, don't aim too high. Call and offer Cam for Tyler Naquin.

That might even seem a little much to ask, but they're not likely to get a better value if they have to wade in to the Gerardo Parra/Austin Jackson/Steve Pearce/Nori Aoki market to keep from rushing the prospects.

Wondering how much trade value Maybin actually has, if any. He is a 1 WAR player approaching his age 29 season, and will earn $8 million in 2016. Seems like their would be better value out there on the open market. Plus, he's proven to be a negative WAR defender.

The value in Maybin is that the commitment is only 1 year. No FA that is an average MLB regular would ever sign for $8m, so he makes an ideal bridge and/or fill in for a contending team. I would expect Maybin to command a prospect on the level of Jenkins if he were traded.

It's kind of like why an expensive Ace only signed for 3 years would be preferred by some teams over a guy like Price that will command a 7 year commitment.

Plus the option has some value.

That's where Cam's ultimate value lies right now (to me, at least). He's likely to be as good as most of those options I mentioned who aren't likely to accept a one-year deal unless they haven't been signed much closer to camps opening.

He's just that perfect "bridge guy" - not likely to hurt you at all if you need him to play everyday (at any OF spot truthfully), and brings plenty of value as a 4th OF if/when your regular guy comes back (occasional power and speed) without requiring an extended commitment.

That's why I've long said he's perfect here - he keeps Fredi from having to play Bourn every day until Mallex is truly ready. There's little doubt he makes this team better than it would be if that was the case, but given the fact that we're obviously in the middle of a complete tear-down, why not trade him to someone who can use him in the same fashion for someone who MIGHT become a regular one of these days and take your lumps with Bourn until Smith forces him to the bench?

At worst you get another 4th OF who you control for 6 years.

If CLE is a possibility, could we get Mejia/Bradley for Cam and a throw in? Is that the type of return yall think we could expect, or is that asking too much? Could we maybe get one of them? Just not sure how Cam should be valued?

Would certainly imagine Bradley's substantially too much to ask for. Likely the same for Mejia.

The only reason I even mention Naquin is that the Indians are loaded with OF prospects. Maybin's peak value likely lies with a team strictly looking to bridge a gap to almost ready OF prospects or as an injury replacement. I can't imagine many teams would be looking at him as an everyday player (other than us). As I mentioned, Naquin may well be too much to ask for - he's just the lowest-rated of Cleveland's three close-to-ready OFs. James Russell may be a likelier return, but I would at least start with Naquin to begin with - if they're looking to "fix" that situation quickly and move on to other things this winter, they may bite.
