Trade targets?

They couldn't find a middle IF that had less than 5 million remaining on his contract?

For a team that has had or will have to start Zach Short, Luke Williams, David Fletcher, Nacho Alvarez, and soon to be White Merrifield for 70-80 games this year, I'm not sure why MI wasn't addressed.

I was disappointed to not get Paul DeJong. He won't great but he doesn't have to be to be a big upgrade over Arcia.

ESPN blurb noting Atlanta as The Biggest Loser:

There's no doubt the Braves have been hammered by injuries, taking much luster out of a team many saw as baseball's co-behemoth along with the Dodgers before the season. For all their issues, the Braves are still in the mix for the top wild-card spot in the National League. And we've seen Atlanta overcome major injuries in the best way possible, winning it all in 2021 with Ronald Acuna Jr. on the shelf, as he is now.

The Braves needed to add to their rotation, especially given the recent injury concerns around breakout righty Reynaldo Lopez. They needed to shore up the outfield and I'm unconvinced that a Jorge Soler reprise is the answer. Maybe if they had an opening at DH that would work, but with Marcell Ozuna, the Braves have less flexibility at that slot than anyone else except for the Dodgers.

Maybe the Braves just don't see this as their season, or maybe the market didn't break their way. The bottom line is the same either way: The Braves didn't do much to improve themselves, and most of the other leading NL wild-card contenders did. In a race this crowded and this close, that might be the difference.

I hate ESPN.. never watch or visit their site.. but I agree for the most part.

AA is banking on a lot of things going right from here on out and unfortunately will have to leverage on guys who should not be on a contending team. There was plenty of help that could have been had for cheap and AA went with the whole "lets redo 2021" thing that might bump this team from the playoffs.

now saying this, I wouldn't blame the Braves missing the playoffs on the trade deadline.. it would be a bunch of factors (twit, Olson, injuries, etc).. but when you already know what you know, then you have a shot to push some more pieces in to go for it. Adding another pitcher and grabbing a winker (cost basically nothing) would have gone a long way to keep the razor thin edge the Braves hold in the WC.

Will be interesting to watch.. and if we see 10+ quad A starts from this point forward, or Ozzie is not able to make it back before the Braves are to far out of the playoffs.. then AA might need to be replaced... saving 10 spots in a draft is not that important when you pick a 5'10 pitcher from Miami with a 6+ ERA and pay him close to slot in the 4th round.

Here's my thing.

Winker didn't cost much to acquire and is on a super cheap deal. Paul DeJong, likewise was making peanuts. Flaherty, also, did not cost a ton to acquire and his contract was no worse than Soler's.

Along with trading Minty, we could have easily made these 3 deals work while giving up very little in prospect cost and staying under the tax threshold. And we would be a lot stronger of a team right now.

I disagree with the ESPN take. The Braves already have a strong team that is just under performing. I think bringing back Soler and Jackson and shaking up the vibe is just what the team needed.

I wish we could have upgraded the IF more but I'm not sure there was an arm that was moved that would have been a game changer for us.

That ESPN blurb seems short sighted.

Maybe it's copium but with the Braves not targeting a SP I think that means the Lopez issue isn't that serious. Soler was one of the better hitters that was moved and he will be playing the OF. ESPN isn't the only thing to question that move because he was a DH all year. That won't be the case here so I'm not sure what the point is of bringing that up.

Hard to know what AA's plans are. For all we know the Soler move could be also planning for the future. Any combination of letting Ozuna walk or pushing Kelenic to the bench to finally have a quality 4th OFer is in play.

I don't think there is any way that we let Ozuna walk via FA. At worst, they would pick up his option and trade him. If they decline the option, he has played well enough to get the QO which will be more than his salary would be next year on the option.

BTW did anyone see that after the trade deadline, Miamis TEAM payroll stands at $14.7M

They should seriously lose any additional $$$ from MLB.

This is why there needs to be a salary minimum. I wish we could create more teams and set up a system like the Premiere League where the worst teams get dropped every year.

I also want a relegation system like used in the Premier League. I don't have any problem with what the Marlins are doing. I think what we need is a rule that teams have to be revenue neutral over a 10 year span. I don't have a problem with a team saving money while rebuilding to spend when they are competing. I do have a problem with an owner not spending money so he can pocket it. I also take issue with owners pumping money into a team at an loss. I also don't know the rules on international income but MLB needs to do to it what it did to our TBS money. All split evenly between the teams.

I can’t believe this fan base out of any other teams fan base would be ok with NOT getting another pitcher. Even if Fried and Lopez are back. And even if Morton isnt 49. The other two starters are sale and his glass arm and Shwelly who is already at a career high for innings and it is growing. We have already enjoyed numerous quad A starts and currently locked with a 5 man staff that has 5 huge red flags.

Even grabbing a mid level starter that would not start in the playoffs would help this team get there and hopefully healthy. Just boggles my mind that everyone is just giving AA a pass for not snagging one of the cheap pitchers to help.

I agree. There were plenty of mid level starters available. I was really on board for a Zack Littell or Cal Quantrill type who shouldn't have cost much more than a Dodd/Vines type of cost to acquire.
