Trades/acquisitions

don’t understand why AA decided to make all these moves in a push effort in the year Ronald
is out. like why not upgrade the depth of the roster like this last year before the deadline? he’s made so few moves until now, when the chances of actually winning are tiny. i don’t really get it.

He isn’t good at what he does. It’s pretty simple as that.

Gave up nothing for the future and give the fanbase a chance to have a fun September while also creating long term solutions possibilities.

I can't for the life of me understand how someone could be mad at what AA did unless your argument was that you wanted a full sell.

It doesn’t put the Braves vehicle into overdrive, but Rosario and Soler are both really good buy-low candidates. I think the hope is to catch lightning in a bottle over the last two months, and to properly platoon these guys as they all have pronounced splits (including Pederson). If Snit can be forced to utilize these players correctly, if potentially does make us a better team. Pretty much the perfect acquisitions for a team in our situation. And then Rodriguez was an absolute steal.

i am really happy that really no part of the future was mortgaged at least.

He was in a tough spot without a doubt. Last year’s success was a mirage in a shortened season. This team lacked the pitching to really be a serious threat. The Braves have been an average ball club basically all season. The additions made were pointless and screamed of desperation to try and remain relevant. They haven’t caught the Mets before Acuna went down and they aren’t going to now. This is a 78 win baseball team no matter how you slice it.

I'll wait to see what we are when we have actual major leaguers in our outfield and an additional back end bullpen piece added.

This is with Ynoa/Anderson coming back, adding Muller to the pen and greatly improving our catcher production.

There is no way this team is under 500 the second half of the season.

Even so the Mets made a much better acquisition and that player will have a real impact.

ANd they lost the best pitcher in baseball so who knows what the future is going to be.

I'd say right now the Braves have the better roster once we get the additions suited up.

because last year he was cash-strapped and faced an uncertain future due to COVID? I mean, this is pretty simple. Whatever other teams did has nothing to do with his marching orders. He’s always been pretty active at the TD so clearly it was an anomaly.

I only partially buy the explanation for last year. It wasn't assured that the 2021 season was going to be "back to normal," yet the team decided to dole out $26 million to Morton and Smyly before the end of November, 2020.

I did want a the Braves to go full reload like the Nats and Cubs did, but there may be reasons we are not privy to that more or less forced them away from being sellers (willingness of their main trade chips to be traded is the most likely factor).

Given they couldn’t sell, for whatever reason, this was a very good execution of being a buyer on paper, but not actually giving up much future value…in exchange for very little real present value. The team didn’t really get much better, but the narrative in the clubhouse and amongst the lowest common denominator fan base is that they are “going for it” and “want to win”. The sheer number of trades, and the names involved drives that point home well.

Muller won’t go to the pen unless he falters as a starter. Ynoa/Touki are the likely pen options. Ynoa can’t be a starter again this quickly after being out so long

Baez has a ~90 wRC+ In his last 1000 plate appearances. That’s below league average offensive production. If he wasn’t a good defender he would be a a below average player. But Mets need offense and he’s a below average hitter. Like usual you have little idea about what you’re taking about. You just hear a big name and assume

FG has updated the roster. Factoring in the loss last night, the playoff odds went from 10% to 12%. They are making their best guess at playing time distribution (they think it’s Soler in RF most nights, and Joc in LF with Heredia still in CF, which is probably wrong but somewhat inconsequential since these players are all pretty equal) but this shows just how little impact these moves made overall.

As a point of reference, the As got an 11 point bump after the Marte acquisition. That single impact player made a tangible difference…which is why they had to give up such a promising arm to get him.

Curious to see if Rodriguez is the real deal. There are some "sticky stuff" accusations associated with him, but there's no question he becomes our best RH reliever. I've always treated Duvall like he's carrying some sort of plague and I know he's better than I think he is (but not that much better). I thought adding both Rosario and Soler in the wake of acquiring Pederson and Duvall was a bit of overkill, but, as you say, the cost was very low.

This idea that it’s smart to “fix the BP long term” at the trade deadline is something I’ve never agreed with. BP acquisitions should be purely rentals due to the volatile nature of BP arms. I would have much rather seen AA get someone like Kennedy or Soria and held onto Wilson because he provides real value as a AAAA spot starter.

Is TDA, Anderson, and ynoa's return baked into that projection?

From a bat only perspective all 4 July OF acquisitions are better than what was playing after RAJ went down. IMO Joc will be around next year, maybe one of Soler/Rosario may get picked up. Duvall shouldnt be that hard to trade with almost all NL teams looking for a DH. Be interesting to see who goes to Gwinnett today/tomorrow.

Ynoa was absolutely dynamite before being an idiot. For me he gets the right of first refusal for the rotation based on his performance when he returns.

Why would Duvall be a DH guy? He’s a great fielder
