Trout extension

That’s an insane contract. At least a decent chance he never wins a postseason series while under that contract. The greatest player since roided Bonds. Think about that.

Let's say trout and Harper completely fall apart like JHey. If they turn into a 2 fWAR player starting this year, what does it do to their organization going forward? Could the angels or Phillies withstand that hit and still stay somewhat relevant?

Angels have not collapsed with the Pujols debacle but that's in part because of Trout.

Let's say you get 2 years of Harper at 1 WAR, non injury related, in year 4,5 of his deal. Probably the best thing they could do, under todays rules, would be to tank like hell, move everything of value and rebuild, taking unused cash and putting it in an account somewhere to pay Harper to go away once the rest of the team begins to develop, which would likely be year 10 of his deal under that scenario. It's the kind of contract that if it doesn't work out no amount of reasonable payroll is likely to bail you out....except, Philly has and will spend crazy money, so maybe they could field a $200M payroll team where one player makes up almost 20% for years on end and still field a competitive team.

In 6 years what will 25 million buy you in baseball. What will the luxury tax even be. They might field a 220 million dollar team in 8 years and still be under luxury tax. I guess one could look at annual growth of tax to see where it might go. Also team payroll seems to have flattened out after periods of growth. So who knows. What I just said could be complete bologna. One thing I am pretty sure of is in 10 year DD will still be evaluating our farm to make that one big trade and he will be shopping on any shelf at the dollar tree.
