Two Florida sources confirm Marlins' interest in Gattis

I certainly would hate to trade Gattis to the Marlins. Personally, I feel as though we match up much better with the Mariners, and I prefer Paxton and Walker to Heaney. The M's just have more outfield prospects than the Marlins. I'm hoping for some sort of mega deal with the M's where we can get Walker, Saunders,(whom they appear to undervalue especially based on some comments by management)Guerrero/Peterson for some combination of Upton, Gatis, and others.

Can't disagree here. If the Braves HAVE to trade Gattis, I would rather him go to Seattle and not end up hurting the Braves with Miami.

Oh, and welcome aboard!

Yea, let's trade Gattis and make the already improving Marlins, a division rival, even tougher to beat. Then we can watch Gattis hit bombs against us for years to come just like Uggla use to do (before he came here and struggled).

I don't think the Marlins keep him more than 3 seasons at max. Furthermore, I think Gattis will be out of baseball within 6 yrs to be honest.

It would suck to see him go but i worry about his long-term health.

If they can get a good haul for him, its something to consider even if its trading him within the division.

Not like we're doing **** in the next 2 years anyway.

This whole "trading with a division rival" reaction has always been overemphasized. What difference does it make if Gattis does damage vs. the Braves or somebody else who's acquired by the Marlins for 1B? They've made trades with Florida in the past, starting with Spooneybarger, then the Uggla fiasco. So, it's not like that's some sort of stumbling block.

I'm not convinced the Braves are trading Gattis, they would have to be blown away. He's under control for four years and if you trade JUpton he represents your only real power threat in the lineup.

I've thought the same thing. The old school way was defense up the middle and power on the corners. There is a very good chance we stick Evan in LF and have a 500K cleanup hitter and punt LF defense.

Really, how much worse can he be than Upton has been the last two years?

Justin Upton was quite bad his first year in left field, -8 DRS etc. But last year he improved to even DRS overall and showed better range, etc. Hopefully Gattis can improve with a full spring training in left field too. That is if he isn't traded and stays with us, I still think both Justin Upton and Gattis will be traded. Though if we keep one of them it should be Gattis given his contract situation, etc.

Further, I don't expect Gattis to ever become a good left fielder but with a full spring in left he could become more serviceable than Josh Willingham was there for years. Plus Doumit didn't do too bad for us defensively in left field last year, so it is possible Gattis won't be too bad. But I do believe it's more important that we put a better defender than BJ Upton in centerfield if we are going with someone like Gattis in left field. That way we have a good defender helping him out, BJ is only getting worse out there (-7 DRS last year for BJ).

Unless we can get a great haul for Gattis, I hope we keep him and put him in left. We still have him for 4 more years which is very important to this team and has a lot of power which is scarce.

I don't care how bad his defense is going to be, have you watched Matt Holiday play LF for the Cards. The Braves will need some power in the lineup and if Upton gets traded, he's the only source you'll have out there. Screw the defense out there.

Did you watch the World Series?? Think KC got there by hitting home runs?? Playing solid defense and having guys getting on base (if they can steal some bases that's a plus) is key.

Well maybe the Braves should adopt a new approach to fielding a team? Because their way hasn't worked when it matters most.

Getting to the playoffs is all that matters. And whether it's a wild card exit or the world series. If you don't win it all then it doesn't really matter. Nobody remembers 2nd place. That said the Braves have some horrible players that are hindering them from being successful and they need to be replaced.

It's one way to build a team. It's not the only way however.

I said it's KEY not the only way. The post I was responding to stated we would be needing some more power in our lineup. Leading the league in HR's didn't work out for us too well in 2013...
