I'd be fine with a McCann/Flowers platoon basically at catcher over the next two years. Obviously the best years for McCann are over, but we'd have two veteran catchers that are excellent pitch receivers and mentors to all the young pitchers that will be coming up through the system, all the while giving us some offense. If the price is right and the Yanks want to eat a good portion of that contract, I'd be all in, there could be much worse scenerios and not many better and allow us to focus on finding more offense especially at third and in the OF.
I think we underestimate the importance of having catchers like that with young pitchers being the main focus and their development. I think someone like Greg Olson often gets overlooked when you look at how young guys like Glavine, Smoltz, and Avery became the who they became. Yes, they aren't going to light the world on fire offensively but they'll call a good game, keep the young pitchers composed, and do what they have to do to get a strike, prevent a run, or prevent a runner from advancing while the pitcher's gain confidence and mature into who they are. There are so many things going on in the game within the game, and allow your veteran catcher that's had success to work through that, while the pitcher just has to worry about making the next pitch.
