Video Game Thread: Atari vs. Commodore Debate...

One thing reddit has taught me the last week or 2 is

1. People have unrealistic expectations for costs in videogames
2. People really like to complain.

Now some complaints I find legit like Nintendo charging 10 bucks for a tech demo is stupid. But people complaining about game pricing and console pricing are IMO childish and either

1. People longing for videogames when they didn't buy them
2. People who wouldn't buy the game full price anyway and just want to complain.

I think people have been set up for a pricing awakening for a long time. Costs for games were able to be kept down by media getting cheaper. From carts to CDs there was amassive drop, and then the price stayed low until Digital came out which is basically free sales. BUt costs of games have just continued to go up to make because that's how shit works.

My comparison is the N64, it was 199.99 at launch, Nintendo wanted to launch it at 249.99 but didn't think it could compete with Playstation and Dreamcast. 199 adjusted for inflation is the same as 405 today, the intended launch price is the same as 506 today. This being priced right in the middle isn't shocking. Lets jump to the WIi though, that launched at 249.99 in 06, which is basically 394 today. It's games sold for 49.99 which adjusted for inflation is 78.79 today. Now people could point at cost of media, the Wii adjusted for inflation, DVDs cost 1.39 for the media. Switch costs around 10 bucks. RUmors are switch 2 will cost around 13.

I remember way back in 97 i saved my birthday, allowance, and paper route money and was going to use Christmas money to get the N64 and one game. I got it as a gift (never expected it) and used that money to get a few games and 2 more controllers.

Got my switch 2 MKW edition preordered at best buy. I opted to go pick it up even though that best buy is an hour away. Because I will probably also swing by BJs and do some shopping and just make a day of it. Or I could go for a midnight release but that seems less fun to me.

I'll get the upgrades for TotK and BotW and I'm getting Cyberpunk because I love that world and will enjoy it more in handheld.

I'll get DK Bananza at it's launch, it looks really fun.

but my ass is gonna get stoned and play Mario Kart on 6/5.

I feel bad that I don't have quite the time I used to have for games. DK Bananza, Silk Song, like a week from Hades 2, and Metroid Prime 4 comes out in december. Hell with new games I haven't even jumped back into Kart in a bit and I want to keep playing BG3. GTA6 is coming out in may of next year (got a PS5 pro in anticipation) like I haven't even put a ton of time into Elden Ring's shadow of the Erdtree and haven't played Night Reign.

On top of it I have a new D&D campaign I need to plan for, but I just want to smash things in bananza and don't have a ton of time because of work and other social engagement.

Anyway just my old man rant.

Say goodbye to EA, they're gonna become even shittier than they already were.
Eh… that company reallllllllly needed to get out of the corporate earnings cycle. Going private might help them take a more long term focus to their game development.

I know it’s Saudi money and KSA is the epicenter of evil supposedly. But they don’t strike me as the meddlesome type.

I honestly don't think they will be good owners. I suspect we'll see EA go even harder on the cash grabs.

This year is so hard to pick a game of the year for me.
2024 was easy, Helldivers 2 (I'm not even that into it I love it)
2023 was a slam dunk, even with Tears of the Kingdom, BG3 is the best game in years
2022 was Elden Ring
2021 was Metroid Dread
2020 was the last year I struggled, Hades, Disco Elysium, Ghost of Tsushima, and Doom Eternal.

2025 I have Hades 2, Bananza, MKW, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Silksong, Oblivion Remaster, and I haven't even played Nightreign, Split Fiction, Doom the Dark Ages, or Ghost of Yotei, And I hear good things so far about Z/A. and Prime 4 hasn't come out yet.
