Viz and Teheran listed as top trade candidates

The fact that people don't like the idea because of defensive metrics makes me love the thought even more. The important numbers you didn't reference for Castro?

.215/.336/.398/.734 and .235/.312/.393/.705

Your Luddite commentary about defensive metrics aside, Wieters is posting a .760 OPS this year compared .734 for Castro, and has a career .744 career OPS, so how the heck is he a big improvement offensively exactly? Beyond that he's constantly injured. When you combine that with his horrible defense he would be a horrible signing.

The nice thing with Castro is his line against righties: .250/.377/.485 .862

He would be a perfect platoon guy with Flowers.

Wieters just sucks all around.

And if you think having a good defensive catcher isn't important when our pitching staff is going to be insanely young then I don't know what to tell you. I mean, take a look at the difference between our pitcher ERAs with Flowers versus AJ, it's not even close. It's not a matter of metrics, it's just common sense.

He makes Flowers look like an All-Star when he's got a bat in his hands. His defense is so amazingly impressive that Houston made Gattis a Catcher again.

Come on folks - we all understand that defense is part of the game. The problem is that there's FAR AND AWAY too much focus on it these days by many of you. The Cubs are winning IN SPITE of Heyward, and his "All-Galaxy" defense isn't the reason. His .234/.326/.323/.649 line and 76 OPS+ isn't what the Cubs thought they were going to get. You don't think the Angels would trade Andrelton's .262/.284/.348/.632, 73 OPS+, and "All-Universe" defense back for the arms they gave up and Aybar about right now?

Their defense is great, fun to watch, awesome to compare with whatever the newest metrics are, and beyond useless to a team with below-average bats at 7 positions. Even with the expected struggles from the young Pitchers, this team wouldn't be "terrible" if you had a couple bats. Good "all-around" players aren't going to help this offense in any way, shape, or form.

You realize that Castro has been a better hitter for his career than Flowers, correct? And is barely behind him this year; 100-106.

I don't want cespedes, Desmond or any FA catchers. It's just not going to be worth it for us. They'll be weighing us down when we can actually be good.

we are getting a FA catcher. Coppy has all but said it.

I just hope it's a 2 year deal with a club option. worried it will be a 4-5 year deal.

I have no issues paying a 30 y/o catcher solid money for a couple of years considering our other salaries. With all of our young pitchers I think it's good to have some vet catchers. AJ isn't helping.

Unless you want Gattis back catching after he is DFA.... :)

The point isn't so much about Castro vs. Wieters as it is about the fact that this team so desperately needs offense that adding a better half of a platoon isn't going to "fix" things. (And yes, I do realize Castro's been slightly better offensively.)

This team needs a couple of established everyday bats regardless of what their splits are, or how much they'll cost on the free-agent market. The organization is now in a position where it can afford to have a couple players who are "overpaid" as long as they're productive. Not B.J/Melvin or Uggla overpays, but if the Braves got 3-4 productive seasons from a 5 year deal with a Cespedes and/or Desmond (20-30 HRs, 85+ RBI, and over .800 OPS), a so-so season at the end would be worth it.

I don't understand the comments about Wieters always being injured. He played half a season in 2014 before he got inured. Then had surgery and came back and played half a season last year after returning from surgery. He never had injuries before that or since and had the usual recovery time from TJ.

Heyman: "The Braves are telling people, including Teheran himself, that he isn’t going anywhere. Though many folks are still expected to try, especially in an environment where pitching is at a premium. But the issue of who starts the opener at the new park next year seems to be a real one."

If they want to keep Teheran, that's fine. But if the main reason is because they want to have him start game one in the new ballpark, then I'm going to be pretty upset.

I think the real issue is "who's going to be the ace" moreso than who is going to start the opener. This is that rare offseason we could not buy an ace in free agency.

This would be a slap in the face to every Brave fan who has been patient during this rebuild. To keep a guy just so you can sell tickets is exactly what we should not be doing. I do not care to be stuck in mediocre purgatory because we needed an opening day starter in 2017...

Ridiculous.

There is no offseason where we are going to buy a pitcher like JT for his price. But we still have to do what is best in the long run.

I'm a big fan of what this current FO has done; I think it was needed and for the most part I think they've executed the plan well.

But, I do think they seem to care a little too much about external noise, I wouldn't say 'thin-skinned' but something like that.

It's apparently more important to have an established opening day starter than to have an offense that is capable of scoring more than 2 runs

It's politician talk...They're telling fans what they want to hear, but they're also going to do whatever the hell they want to. I don't pay attention to much of that

Obviously it's a figure of speech. By saying "opening day starter in the new park" what they mean is "team wants to have a reliable arm at the top of the rotation next season"

I don't think he's traded and I think there are suitable MLB options to bring in to hit that only cost money. If we were to grab one of Castro or Ramos and one of Cespedes or Desmond and then fill 3b with a guy like Prado or Tucker we would still have all our prospects and probably be a much better team. Payroll wouldn't even jump that much. Plus, we'd still have our #1 starter on the hill every 5 days.

I'm also not fully buying that's actually a big part of their thinking, I would hope its not.
