Viz and Teheran listed as top trade candidates

If we were to grab one of Castro or Ramos and one of Cespedes or Desmond and then fill 3b with a guy like Prado or Tucker we would still have all our prospects and probably be a much better team. Payroll wouldn't even jump that much. Plus, we'd still have our #1 starter on the hill every 5 days.

Put Castro/Ramos, Desmond and Prado in this lineup, and the team still isn't going to the playoffs. All that would be different is a few more meaningless wins, a worse draft pick the following year and a lot more committed money long term.

It would be Castro/Ramos, Desmond, Prado, Swanson, Albies, and Mallex. Along with Freeman and whomever we had in RF that would be a very good lineup and if our pitching was solid it could be a playoff team. All wins in a new ballpark are important as it will be more fans who come out and spend their money.

I think that it would put us close to 80+ wins and that's contention for the wc late in the year. If you think the team has to jump from 60 wins to 90 for it to be successful then I think you have unrealistic expectations. We add some offense, we hope our arms develop and that Swanson and Albies are ready for 2017 and we could win 83-85 games with the additions you quoted above. If not, we look to improve in other spots the following year or via trade. It's a process, gotta see the process through.

People always assume elite prospects will come up and play at a high level, penciling in Albies/Swanwon next year as upgrades isn't crazy, but its far from a given as well.

Seeing the process through would be avoiding spending big money in a terrible year of free agency for a team that's currently the worst in baseball.

I think our SS/2B play up to this point has probably been at replacement level or below, so in this case yes I do assume it would be an instant upgrade. Yes, elite prospects can struggle, but they also tend to figure it out as the season goes on

it's a bad year for depth and pitching but there are some good bats to be had. Cespedes,Desmond, Trumbo, Ramos, Castro,Weiters, Prado, Tucker, Reddick....etc It's not like there's Colby Rasmus and a pack mule

The good part of Liberty is they are a corporation and because of that there's already money allocated to 2017 payroll and dependong on trades we should have 50-70 million to spend. What should we do with that money?

Honestly, I'd rather keep being terrible, get high picks for another year or two and deal Freeman/Teheran/Viz for prospects that will be ready in 2019/2020ish. I just think we are a lot further away than most on here do. Use our money to take on bad contracts to add even more assets.

You can't spend this much money on a new ballpark and punt attendance for the next two years. We'd be in debt and have to operate like the Oakland A's after that. You have to sell tickets and that means players. It doesn't mean you can't still work on your farm system. The Dodgers built a great farm system while having expensive vets act as placeholders and still selling tickets.

"I have no idea what the Rangers are waiting on - the Astros are on fire, their Pitchers have been dropping like flies, Gallo has nowhere to play, Profar's their utility guy now...and Julio Teheran's sitting out there."

I think we can improve to something close to a .500 team without handing out 5-6 year deals to Cespedes and/or Desmond. It is true that the better we do the lower our draft position. That is always a given. But I also agree with the point made by others that we are not likely to make a 20+ win improvement to a 90 win team in one season.

I think we spend about 40M of that on upgrading at catcher, third, the pen and the bench. And keep 10-20M in reserve for moves during the season.

I would still rather trade to the Stros. Texas can suck it as they watch the Astros pass them up... all while keeping their super utility hitter Profar as his BA sinks below .300 as his BABiP normalizes..

Just to focus things a bit...

Houston's not been linked to Julio at any point other than those of us saying we'd like some of their prospects, and they seem (to me) to be more attached to Bregman than Boston is to Moncada and Benintendi.

So - if we just decide they ARE interested in Julio anyway and take Bregman off the board, exactly who would you rather have than Gallo or Profar?

You can't make a trade with Houston and not get Bregman back. Thef act we haven't heard much from Houston is also a good reason it may happen. The trades discussed are rarely the ones that happen.

I do think Bregman could be had for the right package. Houston is very cost conscious. Julio is very attractive to them

At this point I'd be stunned if Julio is traded.

Coppy seems hellben on starting the end of the re-build ASAP. And I disagree with that decision, but I believe that is where he is

I agree on JT, I don't think he's going to be moved.
