Way Too Early Impressions

The Olivera/Adonis situation is a unique one, because when you look at it, you got two guys that play 3B, but you can only play one at third base. One guy is Tony Batista, middle of the order power bat that can really swing it but not really pick it at third, while the other is Travis Fryman. What do you do, Batista can't play third and he can't play LF, while Fryman is great at third and can play adequate in LF, so you keep Batista at third and put Fryman in left to get them both in the lineup.

Not sure Olivera is great at 3b or did I read that wrong?

Watching Olivera hit, I'm now discounting his ST stats as a fluke. He looks bad out there. He's not making any solid contact at all probably because his swing is way, way too long. More of what we saw last year.

Unless he dramatically overhauls his game then we're gonna have to reach a point where we see what Mallex can do out there.

Personally, I'm not so sure I don't send Hector back to AAA. That's not a major league swing.

Here are some other way too early impressions:

-AJ doesn't have his head in the game. Missing two throws to home isn't age catching up with him, it's lapses in concentration. Last night it was just him trying to apply the tag before he had the ball. Then there was the baserunning blunder. The Nats CF has a cannon and AJ knows he runs like one leg is broken and the other is missing.

-Gant looks like a future setup man to me. That fastball-splitter combo with the funky delivery is good enough to keep hitters off balance for one inning. Not sure he has the stuff to keep it up several times through the order and he doesn't have the overpowering closer arsenal but I could see him as a solid setup man.

-Bud Norris looked solid. I would like him a lot more as a number 4 starter rather than a number 2 but he looked like he'd provide some value.

-Inciarte is going to be a fan favorite. He's one of those players that always seems to be in the thick of things. I can't believe that D-Backs let him go. I used to be okay with trying to dealing him because of Mallex but now I want them in the same outfield.

-Aybar isn't a very good defensive SS anymore.

-Gordon Beckham should be released. Dude brings nothing to the table.

My way to early impression is Do Not trade Inciarte. The diving catch he made to start the double play last night was amazing. Man he covered some ground. The Braves have replaced the outfield defense they lost with Heyward by picking up Inciarte. I'm not sure about his offense but if he is a league average hitter then he is definitely a player that you can keep and build around.

Couldn't agree more. Loving him so far.

And welcome to the board. Nice first post.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm basically just looking for evidence to back up my pre-conceptions, but it seems like there's a good chance that, however fun Pierzynski was last year, we extracted the last remaining value from his career and going back to the well a second time isn't going to work out.

Not picking on striker, but always think it's so funny to look back at comments people make by shooting from the hip when they haven't even bothered to research players BEFORE offering their personal opinion of them...

Heyward - "Swanson but if he's not in as well as Pollock, this is dumb, just keep him."

bravesnumberone (referring to Pollock) - "What a ****ing joke if we didn't get him." as well as "But remember we know nothing. The Johns have infinite wisdom."

Klesko - "Ender ? Another guy with NO power and cant take a walk. Jesus"

striker - "Inciarte is a good defender but I don't see where his bat fits. He lacks the OBP skills of a top of the order guy. He has good speed but isn't a great base stealer. He's not got much pop at all. Not a bad hitter just not a particularly useful one." and "Yep. If he doubles his walk rate well have something but as is, I just don't see the appeal. I also don't trust defensive metrics"

Brule - "HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Man, I can't remember the last time a team traded away so much talent and got so little back. Heyward for Ender WOOOOOO" and "We traded a controllable young pitcher for Endy Chavez with less power LOL

I'm quite sure a LOT of those comments were before the Swanson/Blair inclusions

I can't think of anyone other than maybe niners who didn't love that trade.

this..

also, Striker was right about ender.. he is a good defender by stats.. but unless you watch someone play, you don't know how good. Simmons is all world to us Braves fans because we saw game in and game out do the little things he did that made him special. Those things don't always show on the stat sheet... Angel fans upset about that trade, just haven't seen Simmons on a daily basis yet. and Ender needs to keep his walk totals up.. his first two years didn't really scream patience..

I wonder if the FO would try and lock Inciarte up now. He'll have good value no matter what because of his defense.

Inciarte is already controlled through his 20s. The bulk of his value is from defense, and that typically has started declining well before a player hits 30. He will be incredibly cheap through the arbitration process because it doesn't typically reward defense.

There is zero reason to extend him.

I'm perfectly willing to admit I undersold Inciarte when we traded for him. Still wont prevent me from shooting from the hip in the future because I'm a fan and it's fun to do that. I also reserve the right to change my mind and want Inciarte traded again in the future.

Ender seems like a poor man's Lorenzo Cain. Or perhaps Lorenzo Cain before last year. Cain's 2014 and Inciarte's 2015 were almost identical. Cain has a little more speed, Inciarte doesn't K as much. Maybe Inciarte can have a Cain like power surge at some point.

I, for one, am SHOCKED that our wise posters here would be eager to jump down the FO's throat and rail against a trade before even knowing what it is.

no way!

this doesn't make them less stupid.
in fact, it may make them worse.
it signals that certain people have no desire to see things through, but are ready, waiting, and eager to criticize at the drop of a hat.
