It would border on insane to call up Minter. Another guy who doesn't have to go on the 40-man over the winter.

This was my first thought. Hart was on the broadcast a few weeks ago saying how 40-man spots are a big concern for them, but they certainly aren't acting like it. Bowman says Gohara is possibly called up in September, too.

Gohara has to go on the 40 man this offseason, so that's not a surprise.

It's crazy. With about 5 weeks left in a lost season the Braves should be looking at all the veteran arms that are on the 40 man to decide who stays and who goes going into next year. You already have the audition of Viz at closer (smart), your useful vet that you're paying anyway in Johnson, Ramirez (young fire baller with promise already on the 40 man), Akeel Morris (safe to see what he has, on 40 man), Jason Hursh (also on 40 man), Sam Freeman (also on 40 man and has done nothing but succeed), Max Freid, Motte, Winkler and Wisler. That's 10 guys before you even dip into guys who are more suspect like Biddle, Blair, Brothers, Burgos, Cabrera and Krol is almost ready to come off the DL.

Bringing Minter up is just unnecessary and will add to the tightness of the 40 man going into FA signing season. Why not wait until spring 2018 to let him pitch his way on the 40 man which gives you an extra control slot for another 6 months? Just another marketing move of dubious current value and long term negative value.

Is it even a marketing move though? How much of a marketing impact would a LH reliever realistically have?

I think they just don't care about long term concerns this will bring, which scares me even more.

I don't necessarily disagree. However, I think it will be interesting how many times Minter gets mentioned over the next few days by Chip and Joe and the media.

It's getting to be "Oh, look, Big Ben" then "Oh, look, Houses of Parliament."

All designed to keep people from noticing that we are stuck on a roundabout.

Motte won't be retained (could be brought back in the spring if they decide they need another vet, but won't be kept on the 40-Man), Brothers is on the verge of being cut loose, Hursh, Burgos, Biddle, Cabrera, and possibly even Wisler may be left unprotected. The chances anyone scoops up any of those guys (other than potentially Wisler) is terribly slim. If someone does scoop them up, does anyone honestly think it's that big a loss? None are likely to stick on anyone else's active roster all next season, and will have to be offered back to us.

Minter, Lindgren, Winkler, and Rivero are all better candidates to be kept.

Point I tried to make on another thread is that had Minter not had his setback earlier this season, he would have been part of the bullpen out of camp or at least by mid-May. He turns 24 next week, and college guys like that can't be looked at the same as a 20-year-old phenom.

Is the 40 man roster really that big of a deal. If we have a guy on our 40 man (especially our 25 man) that can not make it on to our 25 man next year, then we should consider DFA'ing them now. We are one of the the worst teams in baseball. If you can't play for us, who would want you.

That is the position that guys like Motte, Blair, Wisler, Krol are in. No one but no one is going to rule 5 them and put them on their 25 for the whole year....did I say no one.

The 40 man for a rebuilding team should be reserved for your up and comers like Minter, Gohara, Fried, etc.

I'm not discounting the potential 40 man issue entirely, but every article I've read on it hasn't really lead me to believe that there is all that much of an actual logjam at the moment.

I'm curious just what sort of players you think we are in danger of losing. It seems like the biggest by far group of potential casualties are relievers like Brothers, Motte, Rivero, Krol, Burgos, Lindgren, Biddle, Blair, Wisler, Cabrera, Hursh, Winkler or position players like A. Garcia, Jace Peterson, Micah Johnson, D. Santana, Lane Adams.

I'm not sure I see the danger here.

You will notice a number of the guys on the 40 man are injured relievers or reclamation projects the Braves have taken fliers on. I'm not really feeling the urgency.

If Minter is pitching well, no reason I can see not to give him a spin this september.

That's only part of the equation. We are once again burning service time for a guy who we could wait on.
