WEDNESDAY MINORS THREAD 6/14 ...Anderson earns 4th win

Am I crazy for being concerned about Allard? The Ks are down to 6.92 per 9 this season, and most scouting reports have him pitching 89-91.

I'm not worried about him at all, really. He's 19. Not every 19-year old we put in AA is going to dominate the way Soroka is. I won't say I'm pumped about what he's doing, but he's more than holding his own at an advanced level. Guy is a college sophomore in AA. Same way I wouldn't worry about a 19-year old hitter in AA with high k-rate than we're used to. He's completely fine in my book.

I get not being concerned about the numbers and mostly agree, but being 19 in Double A doesn't have anything to do with the velocity being 89-91 or so.

Pretty frustrating if gohara is indeed a better prospect than Newcomb considering who we traded for each

Hard to say on Newcomb. As far as raw stuff, he's probably better than any of them. If he puts it together in the majors he will be great.

I am concerned. His peripherals are not that good. And I thought he was supposed to put up a fastball in the mid 90s when we drafted him. Still, he's a teenager in AA.

Perhaps the further away he gets from his back injury/surgery he'll return to form.

89-91 won't cut it man. He was throwing a lot harder

And where are these reports of 89-91 coming from?

Latest I have seen is from 5/10:

https://2080baseball.com/2017/05/pg...-lefty-kolby-allard-making-early-jump-double/

and says:

"Currently, Allard’s fastball ranges from 92-to-95 mph and he has two above-average off-speed offerings in his curveball and changeup. A scout I spoke with gave Allard 60-grade marks on his fastball and curveball and a 50-grade mark on his changeup with a projection of 60. Throw in a plus to double-plus control grade thanks to his K:BB rate of 4:1 and 1.9 BB/9 in Double-A, and you have the makings of a future number three starter in the major leagues."

In-game guns can be very off. I'm trying to remember the site that gives the more advanced pitch velos, but I'm forgetting it atm.

Allard is 19, his fastball will get faster. Maybe AA coaches are trying to teach him how to take a bit off to throw strikes or tweaking his fastball delivery or something. Count me as a little worried about him only for injury risk, not at all for performance

If the case that's great. I was just replying to the guy who said 89-91.

Can't remember who wrote it after seeing him this year, but I know there has been at least one article written mentioning it.

Here's one report after watching him in Rome last year that says he was 89-92: https://www.baseballhq.com/content/minors-eyes-have-it—kolby-allard-chris-paddack

I saw him in person and it was 88-92 according to trustmark park radar gun. No idea if gun is accurate. I also have no idea if it was a cutter like enscheff asked. I'm no scout and I certainly wouldn't put a cap on the kid bc of some "scout report" I gave

I have no idea. I'm not sitting there with a radar gun getting velo readings. I can only go by what I read, which is why I'm asking where those reports came from.

No matter where the info comes from (as long as it's accurate), 89-91 isn't going to cut it if we are talking about Allard being a Top 25 prospect with TOR upside. If we are comparing THAT Allard to Wright...he isn't even in the same tier as Wright.

Same thing with Soroka. If Soroka is succeeding in AA agaisnt inferior hitters by pairing mediocre stuff with superior sequencing/control, he also isn't as good a prospect as Wright. I can't find recent accurate data on either guys though to form an informed opinion.

I've never thought of Soroka as having mediocre stuff, hard to find really good recent reports, but here's the tools from Pipeline/FG/2080.
