I promise, someday I will learn how to link but for now: Cincinnati paper few days ago, article by Paul Daugherty: "Trading Brandon Phillips for Dan Uggla would be a good thing.......................................for the Braves"
Here is the article:
DDBP TAKES GOLD. Defense is the most subjective piece of the baseball puzzle. I know there are now SABR stats for it, but to judge a guy’s defensive ability, you pretty much have to watch him play all the time. I dont watch D. Barney all the time, so my opinion is less than expert. But I’ve never seen anyone play 2B better than BP.
He makes the difficult seem routine and the impossible merely difficult. He gets to balls I dont see others reach. You might not like his flair, but that’s a personality thing, not a performance issue. Phillips lost a few GGs early in his career, to O. Hudson, because more than any of the other awards, the Gold Glove favors familiar names. How he lost out to Barney last year is beyond me. Barney made fewer errors. Even an OG old-schooler such as myself knows that errors is no way to measure defensive prowess
I also don’t see how J. Bruce didnt get his first GG. But again, I don’t see G. Parra play all the time. Bruce has good range, gets good jumps and has a terrific arm. He never looks bad. He helped Choo this year. Bruce is still young enough to get his due. Disappointing, though. He missed the All Star team as well.
Phillips didnt make himself available via conference call to the local media. He believes we are trying to get him traded. Not so.
We are reporting the whispers. They fairly roar.
Personally, I hope he’s here next year. I think it’d be a mistake to deal him, because the Reds would not get equal value in return, certainly not in the short term. The rumor that the Braves would part w/D. Uggla for BP would be a good thing… for the Braves. What the Reds do not need is another guy who’s going to K 150-plus times, and doesnt give you much beyond a home run bat.
Trading a player for constructive reasons is one thing. Dealing him for personal reasons is another. Is BP’s personality really that much of an issue?
