White Sox Release Dayan Viciedo

I'm normally the first person to mock posters who start threads every time a player they once heard of has been released, but I'm also a big fan of bringing in former top prospects when you have nothing to lose.

Viciedo's still young (26 in March) and he'd be under team control through 2018. In many ways he's a reprise of the sort of hitters we've been purging from the team this off-season, but considering what we're looking at in left field right now, I think we could do worse than bringing in a talented guy who never really panned out and seeing what Seitzer can do with him.

Probably not a roster fit with the acquisition of Gomes, but the two should be cheap enough that it wouldn't cause any real pain to keep both around.

I would have waited a week (or month or year) before signing Gomes. I think Viciedo would have been a better bet. Of course, he doesn't dive much, so what good is he? Agree that he'd be cheap and although he's a terrible 3B, he could at least stand there if need be.

Yeah, I was just thinking that I'd rather have Viciedo than Gomes. The money would have been broadly similar, I think- Viciedo was tendered a $4.4 million contract before the White Sox DFAed him. Of course, I don't think I would have given up any asset of consequence for Viciedo, and Gomes just cost money. Still, it's decisions like these that re-building teams really should get right- take a bet on Viciedo instead of buying the privilege of Gomes' proven mediocrity.

Exactly. I think with the current state of the team bringing in a still young former top prospect with power is a great move. I would love to grab Viciedo and just see what happens now that he's released.

Reading between the lines, it sort of looks like they decided they weren't satisfied with Viciedo's production, assumed they could trade him for some value and tendered him a contract with the intention of dealing him. They couldn't find a deal, DFAed him to force the issue...and still couldn't find anything.
 
Apparently the White Sox were close to a deal with Seattle just a few days ago -- Gordon Edes said the name discussed going to Chicago was Brandon Maurer.

Wonder what happened.

Speaking of the Mariners, I am reminded of the fantastical weeks earlier this offseason when many of us thought Taijuan Walker would surely be donning a Braves uniform in 2015.

Brandon Mauer was traded to the Padres back in December.
 
I thought he'd be a good guy to grab when they DFA'd him. I still do. We're certified dumpster-divers now, so why not? We're not exactly stocked with guys who can hit the ball over the fence.
 
Gomes and Viciedo are similar players. LF platoon bats with below average defense. Gomes gives you more OBP and Viciedo more SLG. I prefer Gomes by a small margin when it comes to on-field production if only because I prefer OBP types. Viciedo is young and there's still a chance things could click for him, so maybe the upside potential ends up making it a wash. Off the field, the consensus seems strong that Gomes is a great clubhouse influence. I've never seen anything good or bad in this regard on Viciedo, but he's unlikely to be a difference maker in this area given his age.

I think Viciedo will be a nice add for someone in a Gomes-like role. He's a FA now and will almost certainly find a better situation than we can offer him.
