Why Academics Leftists and Elitists Need to Treat Ordinary Americans With Respect

A lot of states have adopted a "take the SAT day" practice for all HS juniors. This started around 2010. It is not necessarily a bad thang that more students are taking the SATs but it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out how this could affect the average score. Back in the 1970s and 1980s far fewer HS students were taking it. The percentage of high schoolers going to college in the early 1970s was 50-55%. Now it is about 10% higher. On balance a good thang. But it does bring down the average SAT score.

As for HS graduation rates, I think this is good news. Those parts of the country seeing improved HS graduation rates have also seen improvements in upward mobility of young people coming from low income families. There is even good news along racial lines. The graduation rates of black students from low income families has improved relative to white students from low income families and this has helped them to close the gap in terms of upward mobility. It seems to me our country and educational system are to be congratulated on that.

Key finding from research on upward mobility: In regions where more students finished high school, children from poor families were more likely to move up the income ladder.
