Why would lost bat speed be gradual?
/eye roll
You know there's an emoticon for that, right?
Why would it be immediate?
Because the difference between good and terrible bat speed is miniscule. Losing any bat speed whatsoever can have major effects. Craig ain't young and he was never exactly lithe. He might bounce back, but he's also the type of guy who is just done one day. See: Ensberg, Morgan; Hawpe, Brad.

I'm not saying Craig lost it or anything, but it is a game of millimeters and nanoseconds. Doesn't take much for a guy to disappear.
I do agree that the Red Sox have extra OFs and may be in a giving mood at some point this off-season.
The concern is how eager the Cardinals were to be rid of him after all the big years.
I'm not sure how you could know this.
Well they needed some pitching at the time.
And had Adams (playing 1B), had Taveras (RIP) who was slated to be the RF of the future.
But you have a point.
If Craig can be had for something reasonable, i'd consider it, not like his contract is major by any means.
Why do you think that if a player is 30+ years old and has ONE bad year that he has automatically lost bat speed?
I never said that.
Craig is 30 years old and is showing signs of lost bat speed. He couldn't hit fastballs to save his life last year and the end of 2013. He's a minus defender and baserunner so unless he's well above league average as a hitter his contract is not even close to being worth it. He has been pretty lucky in his career. His BABIP between 2011-2013 was pretty high and he'd somehow have to get back in that range to be effective which is asking a lot IMO. So you got a guy who is a LF/1B/DH type that is going to clog the bases who is making too much money for too many years. He's definitely a huge no. If someone trades for him and he still sucks you have to eat his money and get no production since he would not be a very good bench player either. The Braves can't risk taking on these types of gambles at this point.
