Winkler selected in Rule V

BA write up on Rule 5 draft:

5. Twins: J.R. Graham, rhp (Braves)
Scouting Report: Before a shoulder injury sapped his velocity last year, Graham showed a 93-97 mph fastball and tight slider that made him one of the Braves’ best pitching prospects. The Twins are gambling a move to the ‘pen can help him get back some of the stuff he lost last year. Minnesota had brought Graham in for a pre-draft workout before the Braves took him in 2011 out of Santa Clara.
Chances To Stick: Low.

10. Mets: Sean Gilmartin, lhp (Twins)
Scouting Report: A first-round pick of the Braves in 2011, Gilmartin was expected to be a polished lefty who would move quickly despite average stuff. The stuff has proven more fringy than expected, and the Braves dealt him to Minnesota last offseason for catcher Sean Doumit. Gilmartin doesn’t project to be a useful one-inning reliever, so his best chance to make the Mets is as a fifth starter who can eat innings.
Chances To Stick: Low.

11. Braves: Daniel Winkler, rhp (Rockies)
Scouting Report: Winkler doesn’t have top-of-the-scale stuff, but he’s always missed bats. He led the minors in strikeouts in 2013 and was outpitching the more highly regarded Jon Gray and Eddie Butler last season before he went down with an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. That actually will make it easier for Winkler to stick on the roster. He can spend time on the disabled list and be sent to the minors to make rehabilitation starts. If he can join the Braves by July, he would receive the 90 needed days on the big league active roster Atlanta needs to keep him.
Chances To Stick: 50-50.

On the other hand, I vaguely recall reading that if a Rule 5 guy is on the big league DL all year that the roster requirement "resets" and he has to spend the next year on the major league team or be returned.

Is that right? Can you get around that by keeping Winkler on the DL all season, then "activating" him to the big league roster for September call-ups?

He can/and will start the season/spring training on the 60 day DL meaning he doesn't have to be on our 40-man roster. However, he will have to be on our 25-man roster for 90 days once activated. Brilliant move by the front office to get a top-10 prospect who can rehab in the minors then come up as a reliever -he would be on an innings limit anyways- and start to stretch back out as a starter next spring.

Also, don't see Graham sticking on the Twins 25-man roster all year and if that were the case we would be getting the best of both worlds.

utter disrespect; got Doumit's first name wrong.
 
Any move that pisses off another fan base as much as the Winkler pickup is a good one on the face of things. Kid could be ready to throw by June.

rico I agree with you but here's my thinking:

If the Braves start off hot and are in "contention" (not 10-15 games out) they will keep him on the DL until it's time for him to get ready and become a September call-up. This will result in having to keep on the roster for the rest of his time in 2016 when he'll be fully healthy and could be a long man or even 5th starter.

If the Braves start off slow and are in a major hole in the standings they will bring him up whenever they deem he's fully healthy. Since in this scenario we will be out of contention we can get by with any struggles he might have. Then come 2016, and when he's hopefully healthy we can decide where he fits best.

Did that make sense? Just my opinion, but anyway you look at it, it's a very good pickup and an extremely smart one!!

Either way, having him active in September would knock 30 days off the requirement. If he rehabs in June, then July and August could be live for him as well

He's relatively free. We can just DL him, so he won't take up a 25-man spot. He's shown more than Graham, who we let go before we had him. Graham was not explicitly let go for Winkler. He was let go beforehand, and we got a better player.

He's relatively free. We can just DL him, so he won't take up a 25-man spot. He's shown more than Graham, who we let go before we had him. Graham was not explicitly let go for Winkler. He was let go beforehand, and we got a better player.
