The Phillies problem was that they held on too long still trying to go for it and they didn't have a good farm system to support the major league team.  If you have money and/or a farm system, I don't see the problem going for it (assuming reasonable moves).  Its best to have a mixture of vets and young players.  
I really don't see the desire to trade for Sale, but an outfielder makes a ton of sense.  If I was them I would be after Eaton instead of McCutchen. 
That team could be really good, imo, if they went a different route than it looks like they are heading.  Instead they are looking at a small number of impact guys instead of spreading it out a little and attacking more potential weaknesses.  They want to win one for the 90+ year old owner.
