Zito's Song of the Day

Since this thread started with the Boss, I had to step in with this awesome moment from his Australia tour last month. This is how he opened his first show in Perth and, yes, that's Rick Morello leading off the four-man guitar assault around 3:10.

Oops about Morello (check my posting time). Springsteen only did the Royals cover in his two New Zealand shows because that's where Lorde hails from. I was hoping he'd bring some of that novelty to the US leg, but early returns are not promising.

Here's one of my favorite obscure Bruce songs. This was on Lucky Town, I think, so this is a rare E Street performance.

It's gotten such positive feedback on it I think he would do it stateside. That being said when you've released nearly 20 albums you don't have to do covers. Rush never does covers. Even PEarl Jam limits their covers.

Everything changed when Bruce starting taking requests during The Rising tour. Collecting signs and occasionally pulling a song out his ass has been more commonplace now. Here is a favorite video of the band summonning up a Chuck Berry classic with 40,000 people watching.

I know this isn't Bruce song of the day, but I have to marvel that he didn't release or play this song for 30 years, but turned it loose on The Promise and was amazed when his European crowd jumped right in. Just one more case that The Boss' throwaways would be someone else's hit.

For an old rocker like me, this Whiskey Myers song evokes Steve Earle's great Copperhead Road. Good stuff. Leaves the polished Nashville stuff in the dirt.

Yeah Copperhead Road came to mind when I first heard it too. He has another song called Virginia that I like. It's slightly more poppy but still pretty good.

Styx meets Metallica (to my ears, anyway)

Here's a change of pace but a remarkable song. Band Circle II Circle is a direct offspring of Trans-Siberian Orchestra, especially the vocalist, Zak Stephens. Jon Oliva of TSO is on piano and Matt LaPorte is playing the unforgettable guitar. This was recorded in 2003, LaPorte died in 2011 of sleep apnea at the age of 40. So glad this was something he left behind...

Had to post this since it's so sharp and crisp. From Australia this March; amazing that Springsteen has never put this song on a studio release. Nils and he both show their stuff; people forget Bruce was a lead guitarist before he ever had his own band. He doesn't rock any harder than this.

Another great (nearly) forgotten Boss song. Version on Tracks blows compares to this. On the 2013 tour, rich vocals.
