Zolio Almonte

Some reasonable minor league power numbers and never really old for his leagues. Don't know that anything in his track record justifies a big league contract, but I understand a few other teams were pursuing him. A league minimum big league deal is basically meaningless anyway, so eh.

Steamer projection for Almonte: .251/.298/.411

Steamer projections for some internal outfield candidates:

Terdoslavich: .250/.309/.395
Cunningham: .256/.305/.348
Constanza: .271/.317/.326
Melvin: .215/.292/.360

Definitely interesting to see him get a major league deal. It looks like he is out of options, so if he doesn't make the big league team and passes through waivers, Braves would be stuck with the full freight. That said, he's 25, a switch hitter and it sounds like his defense is decent enough that he could be passable in center in a pinch.

Major league minimum is not a big deal, but it doesn't look like he is an improvement over our internal options, especially in the OBP department.

Not sure what this move means at this particular time, but just hope that Hart and JC put together a major league bench once again, because as much as I (and everyone else) laments the holes at particular positions on this team (especially offensively) our bench was absolutely putrid last year after being one of our strengths the from 2010-2013 with guys like Infante, Hinske, Gattis, Ross, Conrad, Johnson, etc.

I hope we finally give Terdo a legit chance, as I think he could be a capable backup outfielder/PH option unless he's shipped out that can play the corner OF positions along with 1B. Almonte looks to be similiar to Terdo, slightly more power but less OBP ability, but is capable of playing CF. Combine him with Terdo, Pastornicky, Gosslelin, and a capable backup catcher and we could be back on the right path with lots of versatility.

He was obviously not signed to be a starter, so he is most likely going to be the 4th OFer.

That means my idea of keeping BJ around for the bench is out the window. He will either start, or he is gone.
