Braves trade for Chris Sale - Grissom going to Red Sox (Extension through 26 at 18M)

Ozuna has a club option, which is pretty affordable. Fried and Morton will be hard to replace but the FA market is stacked next year, and hopefully one of Waldrep/AJSS emerge.

I also expect AA to make a run at Soto next year. The CBT payroll goes down quite a bit next year as all these single season dead salaries roll off the ledger, and the cap goes up another $20M.

So in a world where AJSS and Waldrep approximate Fried/Morton, Sale stays healthy enough to pick up his option, Kelenic grows into a 4 win guy, and Soto replaces Ozuna…that team might be better. An extreme long shot, but if you squint you can see it.

If Sale pitches well enough to pick up his option and Kelenic is a 4 win player the Braves would be a legit threat to win 120 games.

Maybe you can throw out a potential lineup or two for us

My favorite part of the Sale move is it keeps Lopez in the bullpen where he can be a huge weapon. 101 straight gas out of the bullpen, cant wait. The bullpen is deep enough where you dont need to stretch anyone past 6 innings but you know how Snit can be.

I can but i cant see the Yankees letting him leave. When the Yankees want a player, they do what it takes to keep him. I also doubt Boras and Soto would agree on him being a full-time DH. But if AJS/Waldrep emerge enough to be viable rotation pieces, AA does have the financial resources to make a huge splash or two next year.

Actually 6’6” my bad. He just looks a lot taller because he’s so skinny, lol. His XFIP was around 3.60-3.70 year which was really good in a year where runs went way up.

6’ 6” is still a giant. I didn’t realize he was that tall.

We got his BFF in Acuna. If we put forth a competitive offer I think that might be a deciding factor. I think we could realistically offer 10 years 400 million. If DH is such a big deal we could make Kelenic DH the first couple years. Braves have never been players for the elite free agents but we are actually at the big kids table in terms of team salary. This would give us two of the top 5 hitters in baseball through their prime years. Might even make it easier to resign Acuna when his current contract runs out.

I think Boras will aim for 500M. I do agree we're operating under a much bigger payroll now, but i'd be surprised if we landed Soto. But he does fit alot of what we need. It is Soto's decision at the end of the day. We dont have a ton of needs next year, so we could splurge it all on Soto if we wanted depending how some of the kids on the farm look.

Next off-season the Braves will once again need pitching and have an elite offense already in place. I just can't see a massive long term contract for a DH in that scenario.

I sort of expect AA to reset the luxury tax, fill holes, and either take on bad contracts to buy prospects or rework existing contracts to be more future cap friendly with anything left over.

Well he already turned down the Nationals offer of $440 million a few years ago. Although that was over $15 years. Something tells me he will push for a higher total amount.

Signing Giolito and then trading away Sale just doesn’t seem like the best way to stabilize a rotation. Odd offseason for the Red Sox so far.

I can’t stand Giolito. Career 4.44 FIP home run rates always terrible because of crappy command. 41 dingers allowed last year, lol. I know Nola gave up a lot last year but usually his homer rates are solid and has a much better career
