Global Events & Politics Überthread

This won't happen so it's a ridiculous assumption.

I wouldn’t have thought Israel would let the death count reach the tens of thousands but apparently the line is somewhere higher, right? Is it 100,000 dead civilians?

Around 40,000 civilians. It's also all on Hamas just like it was Germany's and Japan's fault during WWII. for their civilian losses.

Do you think that if Hamas had the capability to wipe Israel out, they’d do it?

Again, you don’t get to reap the rewards of being a morally superior nation then resort to comparing your actions to those of terrorists. Yes, Hamas would likely do this, but they’re nowhere near being able to do so. Israel is treating Hamas as an extinction-level threat, but they just aren’t able to do that. Israel is that powerful and I contend they’ve been too heavy-handed in their response.

I don’t think we should have done some of the air raids we did in Germany nor should we have dropped the atomic bombs in Japan.

And given that Israel is approaching that number of civilians, will you start opposing the response once they cross that line?

If nothing else, I guess it’s morbidly amusing discovering how many people you’re willing to sacrifice in the name of another nation.

As I said this is on Hamas. Israel has tried your way and it failed spectacularly.

50,000 civilians died during the Civil War, mostly in the South. Lincoln did what he had to do.

Sherman would have been tried for war crimes if the South had won. He did what he had to do to break the South, which he did.

Serious question for conservatives: if you are a Palestinian-American watching your country supply another one with the weapons needed to bomb your friends and family into dust, how should you react? I’ve been told for decades that letting people in from these countries would lead to all sorts of terror attacks and violence. Now when that isn’t happening and instead people are gathered to peacefully protest the violence in Gaza, I’m told *this* is the evidence that America is doomed.

1. They aren't a country.

2. Why aren't you more American Russians protesting against Ukraine? Why aren't you supportive of Russia against the Ukraine?

Actually Sherman did take steps to limit civilian suffering. Coulda been worse. A lot worse.

And the IDF also follows the rules of war (unlike Hamas). They could do better and we should pressure them to do better. But they do try to minimize civilian casualties. The problem is Hamas' strategy of hiding in densely populated areas.

One of them is a terrorist group. The other is a mostly peaceful nation just trying to exist.

As I said earlier Israel is a western democracy and Hamas is a terrorist organization but many on the left try to find some kind of moral equivalency between the two.

I’m not going to diminish any loss of life in Israel to acts of terror, but it has never once been the case that Israeli kids had anywhere near as much to worry about daily as Palestinian kids have from the other side.

Above all, Palestinian kids and families can thank their terrorist leaders that they allow to control their country. The terrorist leaders that started this war. Their terrorist leaders that use them as human shields.

What? These are absolutely not comparable situations. This war is not taking place within Israeli territory.

Huh, I’d think above all else, Palestinian families would blame the people who actually killed them with missiles.

Hamas didn't invade Israel on October 7th, taking dozens of hostages? Hamas doesn't continually fire rockets into Israel? Hamas wouldn't take over parts of Israel if they had the capacity?

If Russia ended the War tomorrow, Ukraine would agree to all ceasefire. If Hamas ended the war tomorrow and released all hostages, Israel would do a ceasefire as well.

In both Wars, there is only one side that wants to take over the other country. Ukraine and Israel just want to exist peacefully.
