Trade targets?

To repeat a famous quote….

Nacho “gets on base”

Of course we want the power to come, but getting on base is valuable. Now… can he play SS?

Nacho is an interesting player. He's shown some promise, but what kind of a player is he truly? So many fans want him up now because of Arcia's bad season at the plate, but is he truly an answer. If he was showing more power, I'd be one of the ones calling for his promotion. So many Braves fans talking about outfield and pitching for the deadline, but SS has become a black hole in this lineup and needs addressing before the deadline.

He may not be the answer but we won't know one way or the other until we actually get a look at him. People talk about getting another SS but there's not exactly another good option available on the market.

He's shown power since being promoted to AAA as well. If he can fake it at the position for the rest of the year I think it's worth giving him a call up

You may want to actually review what Grissom did in the minors, where he also "got on base".

Nacho has even less power than Grissom did in the minors...and neither can play SS despite the fact the Braves kept running them out there. So unless Nacho has good exit velocity and a poor launch angle that can be corrected, it isn't reasonable to think he will be any better than Grissom.

Just because someone is the best position prospect in a terrible system does not make him a good prospect. It's almost certain he's worse overall than Arcia...who can at least play the SS position.

Alvarez looks like a no-power guy who can't play SS, so the Grissom comp is reasonable.

The unknown for me is whether his lack of power is an exit velocity or launch angle thing. If it's a launch angle thing there is hope he can follow a career arc similar in shape (though maybe not in scale) to Yandy Diaz.

Ignacio Alvarez, SS, Braves
2023 minors: .284 BA (419 AB), 7 HR, 16 SB, .786 OPS, 66 BB, 87 K
2024 minors: .288 BA (264 AB), 5 HR, 21 SB, .788 OPS, 42 BB, 56 K

In 48 games at Double-A, "Nacho" Alvarez didn't homer even once, but in 22 games after his move up to Triple-A, he's already homered five times, batting .330 (31 for 94). Power isn't thought to be a major part of his skill set -- and even during his stint at Triple-A, the contact quality is lacking -- but the scouting reports rave about his hit tool and willingness to take a walk. I dare say that the complete package looks a little bit like Vaughn Grissom, but an even better comp, to go a little further back in Braves history, would be Martin Prado. Alvarez almost certainly isn't a stud in waiting, but he may be productive enough to be useful in Fantasy -- and sooner than later.

Curious how you know he can't play SS. This is something I've been very interested in, but haven't saw much either way.

I don't know anything about his capability to play SS. All I know is what the person I consider the best prospect writer in the public sphere, Eric Longenhagen, says about his defense. He said Grissom could not play SS, and he was right despite all the silly "Grissom is working with Washington on grounders" nonsense we saw for months.

Nacho is in AAA, is rated as a FV 45, and is described defensively as: "he’s too bulky to play shortstop...he doesn’t have the range, athleticism, or arm strength". So he is lacking every single physical trait required to be an MLB SS.

They comp him to Yandy Diaz, which is actually very close to the Prado comp CBS just hung on him. That's a nice player to have, but it isn't a SS.

I think his arm is good enough to play SS if the range and athleticism wasnt also bad. From all I have read they say he could play a good defensive 3b. I think Nacho can fill in at SS here and there but playing him full time there is just asking for trouble. I think his best position might be 2b. It will be all about how his bat develops though. If he hits well enough they can justify sub par defense from him. He obviously isn't going to be a big time power hitter but I don't think we need that. We just need someone who can get on base. Fangraphs days he has 80 grade plate discipline. If he can get on base at an elite level I think it might be worth sub par defense at SS.

I think the question isn't if Nacho's a SS long term it's if he'd be able to fake it and be an upgrade over Arcia for the rest of the year. The SS market is pretty bare.

It is a little interesting Nacho hasnt been called up despite Arcia's struggles at the plate. Not sure i'd trade what it'd take for Jazz. Might hold firm (pause) for the winter to see what's available via trade.

Willy Adames is a free agent this offseason and I think he's the one we should pursue. A solid 3-4 WAR Player but won't have the cost of a superstar.

He's probably a perfect target, but would imagine alot of other teams will be after him also.

People are just clamoring for a change at SS just for the sake of a change. This system is terrible, and hoping a 45 prospect who can’t play SS is the answer at SS is just being willingly naive.
