This movement is reflective of hte idea of disaffected moderate Independents/Democrats to Trump. Happening in every state in the country.

Dems right now: HELP US SAVE DEMOCRACY! (unless the candidate you voted for isn't someone we think will win, then we will choose a candidate for you)

I can't imagine how this election looks to the rest of the world. One candidate is a polarizing former POTUS and the recent victim of an assassination attempt and the other candidate who is the current POTUS is being forced out by his own party.

Same group of people are responsible for both and thats what hte world understands in this moment.

Tell me all of this doesn't smell like an all out war within the Democrat party. And we all just expect them to coalesce months before an election against a candidate that just avoided an assassination attempt?

OK

I don’t know if it’s a war so much as it’s a lot of major risk-aversion by the Dems. The more I’ve thought about it, the more I think an open convention and a fresh face could be exactly what they need. If Biden himself drops out, there’s no need to make it Harris. If Biden doesn’t drop out, you have to accept the will of the voters and nominate him though.

Short of Biden admitting that his health is failing (which means he should step down immediately as POTUS), there is simply no way for Dems to spin this. Either you are the party trying to #SAVEDEMOCRACY and you will uphold the will of the people that voted for Biden in the primary, OR all the save democracy rhetoric was completely empty and you are going to disregard the will of the people and select whom you want.

Short of Biden admitting that he has failing health, then the appearance is that he was forced out by his own party. How exactly is that not subverting the will of the people?

I think it’s perfectly reasonable for an 81-year-old to go in front of the American public and say he was wrong to think he had the ability to carry out a second term as President. Should we even be here in the first place? No. Did this process harm the Democrats? Yes. But I don’t think it’s subverting the will of the people to recognize that a mistake was made, even if Biden’s hand is forced.

He's been adamant for months that he is healthy and up to another 4 years. He has remained steadfast that he isn't backing out. If he does indeed back out now, it is 100% because Democrats forced him out against his will, which is 100% subverting the will of the people.

But if the entire country disagrees (do you not?) and he listens to that feedback, how is that sinister? Many of you have claimed it would be a crisis if he were elected again because you say his brain is mashed potatoes. Joe Biden disagreeing with that consensus only to acquiesce to it is not anti-democratic. If everyone agreed Biden is healthy and virile enough for another term and they still forced him out, that’s a different story. But you’re basically saying telling the truth (again, in your own view) is itself wrong, are you not? Go after the Dems and Biden for downplaying/lying if you want, but that wouldn’t make this decision any worse if you agree.

But the party did not primary him and the voters selected him. Biden says he's good.

If anything else happens it's obvious what happened

No, I do not agree. The Dems are only removing support because they don't think they can win with him at the top of the ticket, not because they believe he is unfit. If they thought he was unfit, they would be calling for him to step down immediately as POTUS.

The people elected Biden as their candidate. Forcing him out is 100% subverting the will of the people. IMO, they way they aren't subverting the will of the people is if Biden steps down and they hold a special election to select a new candidate. Of course they won't do that because there are nearly 100 days to the election, and they would rather hand select their own candidate. Totally democratic. Way to save democracy by telling Dem voters their votes mean jack ****.

I actually do respect this take on it a lot, but I think Biden actively consenting to drop out is sufficient to not make it directly undemocratic. The only thing that’s caused this dilemma is Biden looking like he actively can’t perform the job to the American people. There’s a difference between being fit to lead for another 6 months and being fit to lead for another 4 years past that. Biden cannot be *forced* to drop out, so if he relents now that’s his business. The people who voted for Biden in the Primary did so under the impression that Biden agreed he was healthy enough, despite concerns being expressed quietly. If that’s changed and Biden admits it, that’s not subversion, the primaries were.

Biden's not leading now. He can barely string a few setences togethor. And if he were to win the election the same people behind the scenes would be running it for the next 4 years. It's all about electability. And yes Biden can be forced to drop out. Think of it as a buyout in baseball contracts. It just won't be seen that way when he makes his announcment in a few days.

I guess what I mean is that if Biden himself is adamant he can do the job, he can tell them all to **** off and dare them to try booting him off the ticket. It’s what he’s basically done up to this point, so if *he* reverses course, that’s his right and I don’t think it’s a problem for a candidate to make that kind of decision.

I’m not trying to run cover for the DNC here. Many decisions were already made that would make the DNC and Biden out to be awful in that case, but I think sometimes there’s a tendency to say that just because bad things happened previously that you have to commit to it forever or else the “right” answer is still wrong.
