When you figure in Cali taxes, cost of living, and the deferments, Freddie essentially lost money by not taking our deal. The fault is 100% on him.
 
No one is to blame Freeman's exit except his agent. We know that was the case because Freddie fired his agency. I mean it could be as simple as Freddie didn't feel he needed representation anymore. But based on information it seems like the Agency pushed the Braves to choose to act, they had likely inquired about Olsenand found that cost much more appealing than whatever the Agency told them. Details are a bit all over the place as I recall.

It came down to getting someone younger who could be signed for cheaper, or whatever was offered by Freddie's agency and the Braves chose the former. Was it he right choice? Hindsight says no so far as Freeman hasn't stopped hitting and Olsen has not taken the next step. Considering we got him for essential Langeliers and the potential people bet on Pache learning to hit. I don't consider that trade to be bad. Even if we didn't extend him, it was a win of a trade.
 
Olson .140(14/100) with a .422 slug over his last 27 games. But the Braves deserve it for letting the current gold standard at the position walk.
 
The first few years of the contract were never the concern with Freeman, the problem was the risk of decline. He could turn into prime Barry Bonds but that wouldn’t impact whether the longer extension into his prime years was a good decision. What matters is what was known at the time.

The Braves evaluated the risk and made an offer. Freddie or his representatives decided he was worth more. The contract he eventually signed is proof that they were incorrect.

I still expect the Braves to be proven right on this one. We’ll know in a few years.

When you make a bad decision, there are consequences. For what he had done for the organization he deserved to have his asking price met. No different than Glavine 20 years before. I love the Braves, always will but when they do something stupid I am going to say it and not forget it.

I mean if you're going to attempt to talk about contracts pointing to Glavine leaving isn't the best.

Again, Freeman's agent is why he left Atlanta. You dont' just open up the checkbook to freeman, you don't give up the entire future of the Franchise to him.

They are the same in this respect, Braves should have met their respective asking prices with not a lot of haggling.

Why? Contracts are an agreement between 2 parties. Braves said Freddie is worth X, Freddie's agent says we have an offer for Y Braves say sorry we don't feel he's worth that, then he signed a contract for much less. Braves offered freeman more money than the dodgers when tax considerations were in play. We offered him 5/140. He signed 6/162 with the dodgers, even with the deferred cash that freeman could escape tax free, CA tax would have you lose much more money (seems like even with deferral he would pay at least 5M more in taxes though that would really be higher) and that doesn't factor in that deferring money often lsoes you money as 1M today is better than 100K a year for 10 years.

If Freddie's agents told him the braves offered 5/140 Freddie would be a brave. I don't know why this is hard to figure out. I mean if they told him any of the Braves offers he'd be a brave.

That's ridiculous. FF says he wants a billion and we're supposed to cut that check cause that's what he wants? FF played a game of chicken with the Braves FO and AA decided to make sure we weren't gonna be held hostage.

FF didn't play chicken. The Braves didn't do a great job either.. but the majority of blame seems to be with FF former agent (he fired them afterwards) But the Braves offered a weak offer and basically handed him over to the Dodgers. The Braves essentially paid millions more and longer years for an inferior 1B along with prospects to obtain him. AA should have reached out to FF personally but number geeks typically don't understand the human element and go by the numbers and when the numbers offered didn't elicit a response, he moved on. It is what it is, but he will move on from Atlanta one day regretting that whole ordeal, because it will be his worst decision.
