Reports: Braves Acquire Jorge Soler And Luke Jackson From Giants

AA has made some really shrewd moves in the past, but this one doesn't feel like one of them. I generally hate it when a GM - in any sport - acquires these "old faithfuls" from days past. Too often, it's based on sentimental value and pure hope, as opposed to an actual plan. It usually means the GM is out of ideas or out of money or out of time.

AA is at his best when he's making moves no one sees coming. It is only natural that some of them don't work out, but the risk / reward ratio is usually sound. He simply doesn't have 700M available to buy himself certainty. Here, however, he is literally copying his own trade from the past. It reeks a bit of hope and desperation.

Did anyone see this coming? Not sure how this reeks of desperation. Braves OF is horrible and Soler has a 115 WRC+ this year

I have to say, I don't recall anyone mentioning Soler as an option, even in jest. Which in hindsight, we probably need to start predicting deals for all of our ex-players at all times.

I did actually. In the 'Trade Targets' thread in mid-June. It was more just an observation right after watching Soler hit a grand slam. Of course, it was immediately and rightfully shot down. haha

He already signed back Duvall. He brought back Rosario. Players like that are available almost all of the time at minimal cost, but he got those two. Probably not solely because they were the best options for the needs and resources at the time, but also because of the memories. So yeah, Soler is not exactly surprising, even if no one predicted this specific move at this time. He has been mentioned as a target frequently ever since he left.

But that wasn't really the core of my point. I think with AA's best moves, you can feel the work he put into identifying undervalued players that are flying under the radar, and then figuring out the logistics of bringing them to the Braves for a minimal amount of resources. This...doesn't feel like that.

We can worry about next year in the offseason. This deal makes us better this year. A Harris, Soler, Acuna OF next year is not bad at all. Kelenic can be a 4th OF to spell the other 3 and provide some insurance in case somebody gets hurt.

This is a very good point.

It's illogical of me to complain endlessly about the terrible bench AA constructed and then also complain about a potential 2025 roster with Kelenic on the bench.

So while I would have preferred a LHH rental, this trade is perfectly fine assuming Soler can play reasonable defense.

Jorge Soler and Luke Jackson are not expected to report to their new team and be added to the roster ahead of tonight’s game in Milwaukee.

I have confirmed Soler and Jackson are expected to be in Milwaukee today. When they are activated remains to be seen

LMAO. Mark Bowman throwing his weight around

I mean this isn’t an “old faithful” issue. Soler is immediately the best hitter on the team lol

He literally got Rosario and Duvall for nothing.

He‘s not even the best hitter at his most suitable position. He has 1.1 WAR. That‘s pretty much the same value added as Kelenic, who everyone here hates. And it took him 60 more PA to get there.

There is nothing wrong with acquiring Soler in a vacuum. He's a good hitter and we have familiarity with him.

But Jesse Winker was extremely cheap both in prospect cost and in financial cost. I just don't understand why we didn't pursue him harder. He was the perfect fit for this team.

Duvall cost 3 million. So I wouldn’t say for nothing. And He started this whole ‘get the band back together’ crap.

I too like the Soler move in a shopvac. But AA seems to be running on fumes and is now trying things to cover other bad things. But he is just closing the window more and more every move. He needs to push in this year with a good starter and hope to win another title. This team is becoming a mess more and more.
