2024 Minor League Thread

I recently added him to my radar. He seems to be riding some helium with his fastball hitting trip digits.
He's actually had a lot of helium even last year. As with a lot of young pitchers his release point and secondary pitches have been inconsistent but there is talent in that arm. There is a lot to like about him.

He probably did, but last year I didn't care about the prospects because the major league team was more interesting.

I like Lara a lot as a premium reliever prospect. Could be our closer one day. We desperately need to develop some cheap relievers so we dont have to pay 10 million a year for setup men. Our pens going to make makes more this year combined than Juan Soto will get per year.

It's easy to forget that Ritchie was our comp pick round pick in 2022 that we got from the Royals in the Drew Waters trade.

Speaking of Waters, I don't really get why the Royals are wasting him in AAA. He most likely isn't starter quality offensively, but he is a very good defender and it isn't like who they currently have in CF is an offensive juggernaut. IMO, he would certainly make an adequate 4th OFer at the very least.

JR Ritchie has dominated in Augusta. My guess is he’s bumped up to Rome and Lara is bumped up to MS soon.

I think they shut Lara down before they move him up. He is way above innings pitches and some of his last few starts he has struggled (some gems too).. I personally would pat him on the back and let him build off this good season next year.

Why? Use Schwellenbach as the comparison. Braves took it slowly with him and it's proven wise. Ritchie is back of Tommy John Surgery, so let him build up his arm strength. As for Lara, great stuff, but young and let him learn how to pitch. Maybe it's just me and Deester, but challenging guys just to challenge them doesn't make much sense.

With pitchers I don't mind it, assuming they have some semblance of command. The vast majority of starting pitcher's have a "best if used by date" in their mid 20's, either because of injuries or diminished velocity/movement or both. So I see the logic of pushing these guys and trying to get as much out of them both in terms prospect value in trades or major league value until their arm either falls off or their stuff diminishes.

Maybe with Lara, but Ritchie is coming back from arm surgery. Let him build up his arm strength against lower competition.

The New MLB Pipeline Top 100 list is out. The Braves have zero players. Caminit is the new #1 in the Top 30.

Is SS now a prospect anymore?

Probably not. Once a player has exhausted their rookie status they are removed from prospect lists. SS hasn't reached the innings limit for that but might have reached the service time limit which is only 45 days.

22 pitchers and 8 position players make up the new top 30 although DeAvila and Dodd aren’t really prospects anymore.

No John Gill is surprising, but I like the adds of Jeremy Reyes and Ian Mejia

Big fall off of Isiah Drake and Ambioris Tavarez to not crack Top 30

A little surprised McCabe is as high as he is, but he’s just been injured not underperforming like so many others

I’d have Didier in the Top 15

They made some weird decisions like Caminiti #1 over AJSS. They either REALLY like Caminiti or REALLY hate AJSS. Cam hasnt even thrown a pitch yet. He shouldnt even be in front on Waldrep. Also not sure why Murphy is ahead of Ritchie. If both healthy I like Ritchie more and Murphy isnt healthy.

Overall though I like what we have in the farm system. Might not rank the highest but who cares. We have quality pitching prospects throughout the minors. A lot of high upside hitters in the low minors. AJSS/Ritchie/Caminiti are the crown jewels of the pitchers with Waldrep/Murphy a tier behind them. I have no clue on the hitting prospects but I am sure some will break out and some will fall on their faces. Not even going to try to guess which is which at this stage. I dont take pre-A ball stats all too seriously.

I love to rant and bitch about the draft every year.. (this years is the 5'10 pitcher from Miami in the 4th round who they paid over a half a mill too) But it seems every 2 years a prospect emerges from the depths of the farm and becomes a serious, viable player on the team..even if they don't last (i.e. Wright) they did produce for the team. Shwelly is this years version and I can't wait to see who is next (Baldwin, AJSS, Ritchie, Lara,....) If that is what the Brave's farm does, then I don't think anyone should be upset about that. regardless of where the pundits rank it..
