Portland perhaps taking a step toward a baseball team

I’d still take Sale.

It's because he's the better pitcher.

Sale is the NL triple crown winner. If he has to pitch tomorrow he likely gets the 3 K's needed to be the overall MLB triple crown winner. His FIP is a full run lower than Wheeler's and his fWAR is 1 higher. He's the best pitcher in baseball this year.

If he pitches tomorrow and gets shelled, there’s a chance he loses the Triple Crown.

Well that can't be good for team morale, seeing the owner calling out a player in the press.

I can't imagine Montgomery will return to the D-Backs. Which means the DBacks will forced to dump him on anyone willing to take on any amount of his salary. Looking at his FIP, he wasn't nearly as bad as his ERA suggests. Someone might get a steal with him.

BTW, Giants fired Zaidi and replaced him with Buster Posey who will oversee the roster construction going forward.

Zaidi put together a great team (that had a few magical over-performers) in 2021 and I value analytics, but they can only do so much. Giants just don't have a lot of good players. I frankly don't know if that can be laid exclusively at Zaidi's feet, but the Snell deal (and subsequent injury) really messed things up for them this season.

I think Montgomery has been so pissed off at Boras that it probably distracted him. I know he was beefing about the late-signing and all of that. Curious to see what happens going forward. Someone may get a bargain, but he pitches like a mid-rotation guy and I can't believe the D-Backs thought he was some missing piece to the puzzle. Big problem for D-Backs was Rodriguez going down, but when compared to the tidal wave of injuries for the Braves, that was next to nothing.

I think Arizona is just brutal for pitchers. A pitcher better have some pretty good stuff or be an extreme ground ball pitcher to be good for Arizona. Montgomery were neither of those two and we see how that worked out. I think he is a solid rebound candidate for a team in a better pitching environment. Even though theoretically half his starts are on the road, getting lit up at home constantly can **** with a pitchers psyche and Smolt'z therapist says psyche is very important.
