Movie Thread

The best non Super-hero action film coming out relatively soon (Jan 24) looks to be Flight Risk, starring Mark Whalberg. All other ones are Netflix quality movies.

Although Stockholm Bloodbath looks interesting. I just watched the previews the other day. It might not be terrible.

Everything Marky Mark has been in but Boogie Nights is Netflix QUality.

Any non-superhero, big budget ‘guy’ movies coming out this winter?

I dunno about "guy" enough but movies coming out I'm kind of excited about

Conclave - Good director, and a stacked cast, it's obviously a drama

Here - Stacked Cast, Robert Zemeckis directed. COuld be mid could be great.

Gladiator 2 - Could be mid, it's ridley scott, but cast is stacked so I expect it to be well acted at least.

Lord of the Rings - War of the Rohirrim - Really excited for that one. I know some people will be butt hurt because it isn't Tolkien canon but who cares, it has sick direction and great cast.

Nosferatu - Could be bad, but could be elite.

Sinners - Probably the one I'm most excited about.

Black Bag - Soderberg directed, stacked cast.

The Departed? The Other Guys? Italian Job?

Marky Mark has been plenty a good movie.

Four Brothers? That one movie he did with Clooney and Ice cube was pretty good too

It is ironic that wahlberg has gotten a complete pass for his horrendous past incident while people have been blacklisted for a lot less

Marky Mark has been plenty a good movie.

He was a bit part in The Departed. If it wasn't set in Boston he wouldn't have had a role at all.

The Other Guys is a comedy, not what I'm looking for for a good film.

Italian Job is silly, it's popcorn at it's best. I guess it hits some kind of mark, but it's certainly a netflix quality film. Like that one movie with Chris Hemsworth was the bounty hunter dude who rescues the kid.

Awful takes.

The Other Guys can be both a comedy and a good film (it is).

The Italian Job isn’t a “Netflix quality film” (whatever that mean). It’s got an excellent cast. It was reviewed well by critics and audiences loved it.

I finally saw Deadpool and Wolverine. Really loved the fight scenes on the movie. Having characters that regenerate really lets them have awesome fight scenes where they can use their weapons in an entertaining way. I just want 2 hours of fight scenes like this movie. Just hook it straight to my veins. I don't even need a story.

Also got a kick out of Gambits accent. They always go with a more French way of speaking which no Cajun talks like. This was a legitimately real accent. Different from where I am from in LA this was a New Orleans accent more specifically an old man accent. Young people don't talk like that. 60 year old Cajun men do. I hope they make a full movie with that accent.

Anyone see the new Transformers?

Incredible - By far the best movie released. Can't wait till they issue sequels.

The scene where Maximus takes off his helmet and does the monologue to the emperor is one of my favorites. It's up there with Liam Neeson on the phone in Taken.

Come on man.

Lord of the Rings has better monologues than Taken in every film.

USS Indianapolis in Jaws.

Pulp Fiction's Watch or Samuel L Jackson's Angel of Death monologue

Atticus Finch's closing arguments in To KIll a Mockingbird

Morgan Freeman has many in Shawshank Redemption

The Horror in Apocalypse Now

Wife Farting in Good Will Hunting

How did I get these scars in THe Dark Knight

Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs.

Etc.

Don't get me wrong I have less issue with the Gladiator pick. It's solid. Still not in my top 10 personally (nothing gets me more than "Ride now, ride now, ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending!" but that's me) but I can vouch that. The Neeson one is is memery at it's finest but it's hardly anything exception. It wishes it was written by Sorkin.

The 3 best monologues in history are as follows:

1. USS Indianapolis from Jaws

2. The Final Speech from the Great Dictator

3. I am the One Who Knocks from Breaking Bad.

Different monologues hit differently. The Gladiator and Taken monologues are great revenge fantasy speeches. The Taken monologue was awesome when it came out and became a meme due to how it infiltrated the culture.

I love the Jaws Indianapolis monologue. Jaws is a perfect movie and one of my all time favorites. I was fortunate enough to score an original Jaws movie poster which one hangs proudly in our living room.

Theoden's speech before the charge of the Rohirrim is absolutely epic.

It's hard to compare these, though. They're so completely different in tone and purpose.

Watched Watchmen Chapter I, holy ****, it makes me mad how bad Zack Snyder butchered the core themes and plot. He made a pretty looking film, but it spat in the face of the themes and intent of the story. And it just plain sucked. The animated film though is amazing. Looking forward to part 2.

To not fully derail my last post.

I want to talk about how much I hate Zack Snyder as a drector.

He actually started out OK. Remaking Dawn of the Dead and Basically shot for shotting 300. But when presented with a meatier source material he wilted like a flower.

He butchered watchmen

Suckerpunch is unwatchable

His take on superman is horrific.

Rebelmoon is bad.

When you go to Rotten Tomatoes for a Director and your 2 highest rated movies are producer roles, that's not a great look. Seriously his top 2 are Wonder Woman (which he didn't have much to do with) and The Suicide Squad (the one James Gunn did) which he basically had nothing to do. He's like the anti-Nolan where Nolan's producer credits (Transcendance, Justice League etc.) are his duds.

I think it will be interesting to see the future direction of the DCU. Gunn isn't perfect but I think he understands the comics way better than Snyder ever did. Like how he didn't get Superman at all baffles me.
