Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

In a sport that loves to be boring, AA is by far the most boring. Not only does he do nothing, but he acts like a beech when any news gets out to the fans.

To be fair, AA wants it kept quiet until it is done so he doesn’t have to negotiate in the media. Agents want everything leaked so there is media and fan pressure added to the process.

I am okay with his approach.

I’m starting to wonder if AA just sees Kelenic as the starting left fielder and is committed to giving him another year to grow in the role - especially with a new hitting coach. The plan might be to sign a relief pitcher or two, grab a Laureano-type outfielder and then look for a back-end starter like Morton, Quintana, or Heaney. I’m not even remotely sold on that approach, but it does make sense. We’re hearing so much about the Braves making a push for relief pitchers, and it feels like we may be looking to be less aggressive than initially thought.

If AA is going to run with Kelenic as a starter, then the #1 goal should be to reset the tax. If they go over the taxagain and only play around the edges then the off season is a resounding F- imo...

AA will make one big love he always does but man it’s been crickets the entire offseason. When he traded Soler day 1 and restructured a couple of guys deals I thought he was getting ready to make a big splash

I heard he nailed a few cannon balls at the all inclusive pool in st. Croix over the winter meetings

All the extensions were backloaded such that the tax number was much higher than the actual payroll number. That situation is starting to correct itself as the team gets into the more expensive period of these contracts. So it’s very possible the actual payroll number can increase from last year while the tax number goes down.

It’s starting to look like that’s what’s happening, and AA has about $25M to spend for 2025. The tax penalties may be reset as a feature of the payroll and tax numbers starting to line up.

Very true because the later years won't have to be pushed into the earlier any longer for tax purposes, but that said, the extensions still impinge payroll flexibility going forward.

Signing Scott plus someone like Profar plus some Morton-like SP would be the absolute minimum acceptable offseason for a team at this point in their contention cycle.

I think they have their sights set a little higher than Morton. If they wanted him he would be signed already. I think they might go for Scherzer. I dont think they view the team in terms of contention window they goal is to perennially contend. They dont seem to mind overpaying for short term deals they are just trying to avoid the long term landmine contract. I think they will sign a premium reliever with the intention of them taking the closer role next year if Iggy leaves in FA. Honestly with SP going so few innings its almost worth it to sign 2 premium relievers for a combined 25 mill a year who both pitch 75 Innings instead of a top tier SP who might pitch 160 innings for 30+ million.

Don't worry... AA gonna get Charlie Morton and Jordan luplow any minute now. Just can't pay guys market value.

team whiling to spend and game the system that will probably change in 2 years on the new CBA... Dodger$ are holding a master class on how to obtain talent and will probably force the league into more stupid rule changes that won't do anything to help. meanwhile AA is hoping prices will fall to 1998 FA prices.

I'm juggling between AA basically doing nothing or something crazy like trading for Mike trout

AA is still shell shocked from losing FF and the Meth head trade. He hasn't done anything risky since... unless you have a boston giving you a potential ace for a scrap heap player or a great reliever for 10 million a year that you can try as a starter.. he is going to hide in the corner and not talk to anyone.

but at least we had a troll line to entertain us for a few days... now back to hoping Mort drops his price so AA will pull the trigger.

Kim signed for nothing and neither a guaranteed starting spot. Is his injury that bad? I have to assume AA offered more but Kim wanted to be in LA

Edit: wrong Kim. This Kim played in the KBO last year.

Two Kim’s don’t make a Wright

The Kim that just signed moved off SS in favor of the Kim that’s coming off shoulder surgery. When he went back to SS he wasn’t good enough to stick, and went back to 2B. He has almost no power and probably isn’t an everyday player if he isn’t a SS.

The new Kim isn’t anyone to waste any energy lamenting the fact he isn’t a Brave.
