119th Congress or Red Wave In Adult Land

Speaking of performative bull****:

Nobody is trying to compare shoplifting to murder. This bill isn’t about murderers, it’s about how we handle theft done by migrants. The only people making this about rape or murder are the people using one to justify treating theft as a precursor to violent crimes. I’m fine with the act and don’t mind that it passed, but it’s not protecting people from rape and murder.

If you are not an American citizen, and you commit a crime in America, then there should be significant consequences. And it's EXTREMELY common in the countries around the world by the way.

That’s not my point of contention in any way. It’s that committing a crime as a non-citizen already does have those significant consequences. If any government entity in the United States is not already working to deport those convicted of a crime, they’re just not upholding the laws already in place and another law that says the same thing won’t help. But this one adds elements that go against our trial process by making an admission of guilt sufficient to be inadmissible. So a DV victim fighting back against their attacker admitting to having done so could be deported. If you do want that simply because the victim is undocumented, that’s fine but it won’t make girls and women safer from violence. And because those who commit these crimes against women and girls are already legally subject to deportation if convicted, you’re right a law that doesn’t protect any other women.

More DEI hiring. Never stop elevating mediocrity .

All McBride has done since getting there is deftly ignore a handful of her peers both introduce legislation over the facilities in the Capitol building and relentlessly attack her for her gender identity while introducing a bipartisan consumer protection bill and turning the focus back to her constituents. Say what you want about her understanding of gender, but she has done pretty well with the public service and legislation over spectacle part of her new job, which seems like a good thing for a new Whip, don’t you think?

he would be the first freshmen whip in history, no?

I don’t know or care, but I also would wonder how many freshman members of Congress get a bipartisan bill advanced in their first week and I don’t think you’ll disagree that we have an exceptionally dumb group of representatives in the current Congress. Someone who has already demonstrated an ability and willingness to not engage with reactionaries on the other side is actually fairly impressive feat in government today.

I'm just not sure what he could have reasonably done in the first week to claim merit to the position.

If he wasn't pretending to be a woman, I'd bet my life savings he wouldn't have got the gig. Do you disagree?

I don’t disagree, but I think you have the causal relationship wrong. McBride’s profile was raised more by people like Nancy Mace deciding McBride could be her ticket to a Senate seat than anything Democratic leadership has done thus far. Dems are still too busy blaming progressives for the election.

Sounds like we agree he's yet another DEI hire

This is a purely political position, the only “qualification” is an ability to get co-sponsors and votes for your legislation, a thing this freshman representative has already done. I also haven’t seen Dems even pointing out her gender with the announcement. The only people making this about DEI seem to be the Woke Right.

You and I both agree he wouldn't have gotten the position if he wasn't pretending to be a woman.

That's the definition of a DEI hire

Hmm - I wonder why so many were willing to co-sponsor.

Hint - Its also tied to DEI

Again, I agree but it’s because the *right* made her a national headline for the past two months. McBride agreed to not use those facilities immediately and said she wanted to talk about groceries. McBride’s political prowess and personal restraint have been on full display since this all started. So her identity did lead to this, but I contend this isn’t because of a virtue signaling left but rather a virtue signaling right giving her a reputation for focusing on the issues, as one might be encouraged to do as a policy Whip.

That would suggest that giving it to her was the absolute right choice given the point of the role. If you can get someone to support a policy about credit reporting because you’re transgender, that makes her the single most qualified member of Congress.

my favorite thing about this exchange is that we are talking about the same person using different pronouns.

there's no fixing the lefts insanity

Its not based on merit - Its based on virtue signaling so the sponsoring rep gets 'credit'.

Its a house of cards built on nothing substantive. A continuous reverberation of the same bull**** that amounts to nothing.

I’ll let you worry about trivial matters like pronoun choices that made no difference to anybody’s understanding of the sentences those words were in. Let me know when you’re willing to engage with my arguments instead of my word choice.

Your argument that he is only this position because he's pretending to be a woman is one I share

I also agree with you that Nancy Mace helped elevate him

Again, that sounds like something that would be advantageous for someone whose job is to make sure people vote a certain way. The argument *you* are making would mean that anybody but McBride would be less qualified in comparison by virtue of not being able to play the “trans” card. Whether the bill has any merit or not is a problem for everybody else. The whip just needs to get the caucus to toe the party line.
