Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

I doubt they'd entertain Riley moving back to LF or Bregman at SS but Bregman wasn't bad there if I remember right. I'd be curious to let Baldwin start shagging balls in LF in ST.

If Chipper can move to LF for Castilla then Riley can definitely move there for Bregman

Since AA hasn't been able to get anything done, let's go back to the Twitter rumor mill which is swirling tonight with rumors (my source had that right so he obviously must have this right) that the Braves are in trade talks for Dylan Cease.

AA has wanted him for a few years and tends to keep going back until he gets them so Cease wouldn't be a huge surprise but would be a huge get.

Bregman said he'd change positions to 2b also so not sure if LF or SS would be an option. He's athletic enough bc he just won a gold glove.

If Bregman isn't playing plus defense at 3b, I don't think he's all that valuable. His offensive profile has cooled off substantially from his early career highs, when it looked like he was Arenado 2.0. Instead, his career path started mirroring Evan Longoria. And Evan Longoria after age 27 isn't someone I am giving 25+ million to over 5+ years.

Amid the inaction, fan fiction will have to do. Striper Report, who mentioned this Cease thing, said his understanding is there’s a currently a stalemate between the Braves and Padres. Could it be AA won’t give up a top prospect without getting an extension for Cease, who is a Boras client?

FWIW, Striper Report is legit - he reported the Hyers hiring a day before it happened and named specifics that came out later. That said, he's a minor-league guy that doesn't have any real ties to the major-league team.

But regarding a deal, AA has been chasing Cease for nearly two years and he makes this rotation strong enough to beat anyone. Overall, it depends on the prospect, of course. But I can't imagine AA would be excited about trading a top prospect for a Boras client knowing damn well the chance to re-sign him is low and he's still paying his $15M (or whatever it is) salary for 2025. I'd think Baldwin and Waldrep are off the table. And it would probably take another player to trade AJSS. The Padres badly need cost controlled infield prospects, so I could see them being into Nacho plus.

At first I thought maybe Xander Bogaerts could be a part of the deal as a salary dump that essentially makes Cease free and gives us a better option than Arcia at SS. But then I looked at Bogaerts remaining contract....... sheesh that is one awful contract.
