Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

No way do I boot him. I think AA is doing a good job for the most part. I wish he would play the deferment game more and the opt out game more... it sort of limits him on competing.

I wouldn't wanna boot him either but you're in your contention window right now and you have to go that extra mile to get over the hump and it's like AA is scared to.

I think AA is who he is.. He has a target and goes after that target but doesn't go over what he originally set.. He has built a winning team and hit on some nice prospects to help keep the window open.. The Braves are running a top 10 payroll, so I would not call him conservative.. just cautious.. maybe too cautious

I do think the Dodger$ are reading the writing on the wall that the finances of baseball will be completely different after the new CBA.. So they are taking advantage of that and deferring a lot of money hoping to get the happy ending with MLB negating any prior deferments to not count against the new language in the CBA..

When has AA overpaid for anyone during his tenure here?

He's consistently gotten market or below market value deals done. He did one year deals for Donaldson, Ozuna. Ozuna became a long-term extent.

Olson, Riley, Murphy, Acuna, Albies, Strider all got long-term extents, with most being below market value.

We know by now, AA doesn't give long-term deals unless they're already under control and want to extend for a team friendly deal. Remember he offered Machado a 3 year high AAV deal lol.

I don't know what his deal has been. I don't know if ownership is holding him back or what but he hasn't done much at all to help the big club since the break. And it would have looked a lot worse if Ramon had played in Atlanta like he did everywhere else.

I had no issue with the deadline moves. The team was what it was with the injuries that it had. Time will tell with how the offseason ends up.

Assuming the estimated luxury tax numbers on fangraphs are correct. They were off a decent bit last year.

Yeah, they make some assumptions about the "other" money that counts towards the tax because they have no insight into actual team expenditures, mainly a $17.5M hit they call "Estimated player benefits to be paid".

Claiming the Braves have $33M to spend is pretty close to the $24M RR has them under the first tax when considering the error bar on those estimates could easily be $9M. So it's perfectly reasonable to conclude that AA is ducking under the cap this year, has $33M to spend, and wants to save $3M or so for the deadline.

Either way, $25M-$30M is enough to fix the obvious holes on this roster.

yep.. I think AA is going to wait and see who will take a 1 or 2 year deal and stay under the tax so that he can blow it out next off season... at least that is my hope at this point.

I also think next year the Dodger$ wont be huge players in the FA market so that will take a big fish out of the pond that the Braves would be competing with.

The Dodgers need a SS so they'll more than likely be in on Bichette and the Cubs will spend whatever to retain Tucker. Maybe I'm wrong and AA will overpay but he hasn't to date.

AA makes pretty clear in interviews that he doesn’t want to have a window and then have to rebuild. He wants a roster every year that’s capable of winning the division and getting into the playoffs where anything can happen. So I think that largely explains (doesn’t excuse) his inaction this offseason. He’s looking at every move not only for what it does for the 2025 team but how it affects the 2029 team and every roster in between. He’s got a core locked in that’s going to keep the team competitive in the division and pieces returning that could be major upgrades from where we ended last season. So I think he’s hesitant to make medium or long term commitments to players that might hinder his flexibility 3 or 4 years from now.

To me that’s why you’ve seen him be willing to throw money at Hoffman and Scott since they fit now and in future years with our relievers on short contracts and why he may be less inclined to meet the demands of the starters and OF who’ve signed so far since we have longer term pieces there. AA has earned the benefit of the doubt from me, but I don’t think there’s any dispute that so far this offseason has been a failure since aside from hoping for returns to health and form we have not made the team better.

Blue Jays are deferring a lot of Santander's money. I was told only the Dodgers were capable of doing this.

Gotta respect AA for looking beyond the next couple of years instead of just trying to win now while guaranteeing a rebuild in a few years.

We may be frustrated right now, but what he is doing makes sense if we look ahead a couple of years.
