Second ('Third') Trump Presidency Thread

Exactly my point. If my taxes don’t go down or my quality of life doesn’t markedly improve in the next 4 years, I don’t really give a **** if $50 million less went to condoms for Gazans or not. We have Trump and Hegseth teasing a mother****ing iron dome for America, a country that has no threats capable of attacking us in a manner that would be protected against by such a system. That alone would cost more money than DEI programs or State Department initiatives and would do **** all for me or my taxes.

Money spent is money spent, and there’s a large contingent in your movement that forget that, just as there’s a large contingent in mine that do the same. Not all spending cuts are unjustified or bad. But there’s a lot of folks that are unduly claiming life will improve because $50 million will be spent on a conservative initiative instead of a progressive one and I think it’s worth pointing out that you’re not improving the lives of Americans like me unless you take less of my money, make my money go further through lower prices or make so many new jobs that my income rises as a result.

Who says we have no threats? Drone warfare is goign to change how battles are fought forever.

I would want an Iron Dome given we have just created an enemy on our northern border. One of our esteemed posters wondered about the long-term strategy. Well it seems obvious. We need an Iron Dome cuz of Canada.

If we’re going to take hypothetical threats as a rationale for the most expensive defense project in human history, you’d might as well just eliminate the rest of the federal budget and funnel it to defense. They can’t take over a country if every citizen has their own personal nuke!

As crazy as Trump may go, dems don't seem interested in offering a sane alternative

I don’t think Dems should abandon or soften on what they expect in terms of equity for marginalized groups like nonbinary folks, but I sure do think they need to realize they are going nowhere fast if they continue to prioritize it in the dumbest ways. They also need to find some ****ing talent because the past two weeks has been horrifyingly ineffective on a national level. Schumer needs to go, Harrison needs to go, Jeffries probably needs to go.

As long as you don't get mad when I call the non binary official they are insisting on a DEI hire

Hypothetical threats? ok....

Well until the Dems 'soften', really abandon the poison altogether, they will continue to become more of a marginalized minority themsleves.

So by all means - Do not abandon.

George misconstrues what was actually said. Having listened to it, there is nothing about electing non binary candidates. There is a horrific quota, however, to ensure gender equity. Same number of male and female vice chairs. Hopefully, someone will inform George that the crime is not about a quota for non-binary candidates but an equality requirement for male and female vice chairs.

I would add a personal observation. From this mania for equality in the number of vice chairs a direct line can be drawn to the lack of firefighting capability in Los Angeles and the accident between the helicopter and plane earlier this week. This is just a personal belief.

If you don’t see the difference in a tangible deterrent or protection to US people, vs rubbers to people who throw homos off roofs, then I’m not sure you can be reasoned with

“Tonight, I am announcing Canada will be responding to the US trade action with 25% trade tariffs against $155 billion worth of American goods,” the Canadian leader said in a news conference Saturday night. “This will include immediate tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods as of Tuesday, followed by further tariffs on $125 billion of American products in 21 days’ time, to allow Canadian companies and supply chains to seek to find alternatives.”

Affected items will include American alcohol, produce, clothing, shoes, household appliances, furniture, materials such as lumber, and “much more,” Trudeau said.

Mexico’s Sheinbaum also struck a defiant tone Saturday.

“When we negotiate with other nations, when we talk with other nations, [it is] always with our heads held high, never bowing our heads,” Sheinbaum said speaking in Chicoloapan de Juárez, east of the country’s capital.

“I instruct the Secretary of Economy to implement plan B that we have been working on, which includes tariff and non-tariff measures in defense of Mexico’s interests,” Sheinbaum said later in a post on X. It is not clear exactly what the retaliatory tariffs involve.

A White House fact sheet on the tariffs said Mexican drug trafficking organizations have an “intolerable alliance” with the country’s government, accusing the government of providing a “safe haven” to cartels. Sheinbaum strongly denied “having alliances with criminal organizations,” calling the accusation “slander.”

I don't think these are the most effective measures Canada and Mexico can take. I can think of others. Fundamentally, they must stop thinking of the United States as a reliable ally or an ally of any kind . They should assume it is a hostile power and reorient their economic and national security policies accordingly.

Indeed maybe they should reign in the fentanyl and cartels themselves instead of waiting on us to invade to do so.

Getting in bed with China on that was a poor move

Americans' insatiable appetites for illicit drugs have done a tremendous amount of damage to Mexican society. Same for Colombia during the era when cocaine was king. If reparations are due it is to them.

Speaking of going to bed with China. That's exactly what Mexico, Canada, Denmark and Panama should be doing. Play the China card for all it's worth.

What is trumps goal with regard to Canada? What do we expect them to concede?

exactly

the announcement references the border and fentanyl

Canada is as good a neighbor as we could wish for. It takes border security seriously and is sympathetic to the need for interdicting fentanyl. Because it has its own serious domestic problem with addiction.

This is silly and pathetic. What Canada needs to do is open up its energy sector to Chinese investment and increase its capacity to ship oil and natural gas to China and other markets. It needs to wean itself from being an economic vassal of the United States. It will be costly and painful and take time. But it should do it if it wants to survive as an independent country.

They are a top 5 producer of both oil and natural gas. They should start acting like they have a country worth preserving.

Not to mention they’ve completely trampled on their citizens rights all while opening to the door to a disgusting amount of third world trash making our birder with them much more risky.

“Open it up”. - like it hasn’t already.

Looks like you’ve got a new destination to live! Just remember how much nicer their border is then ours just because you know Canada is better.
