Economics Thread

It seemed like you are hedging a bit and thats smart - I'll give you even more time to do some research before I show you how Canada has many protective measures in place against US goods being imported to their country.

That's part of why their per capita GDP is not as high as ours.

Openness, whether it be to trade or ideas, is one of the most important determinants of economic growth. Countries that are open are richer. It is a well-researched thang.

It is very generous of you and Trump to be so concerned with trying to help other countries catch up to us. Commendable even.

There is no intention of having a trade war to hurt both countries with Canada/Mexico - Its been very clear from the beginning. But carrot/stick methods have to be used to change behavior and specifically to stop getting closer and closer with the CCP.

President Trump on Wednesday announced a one-month exemption on tariffs against Canada and Mexico for cars following a meeting with the three major U.S. automakers.

Trump spoke with the leaders of the Ford, General Motors and Stellantis on the heels of imposing 25 percent tariffs on all imports from Mexico and Canada on Tuesday.

Following those discussions, Trump said in a statement read by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt that the administration is giving a one-month exemption for automakers associated with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA), which Trump signed during his first term.

The exemption would apply to Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, as well as other companies with production facilities in the three North American countries.

Asked if there would be any other carve-outs to come, Leavitt said Trump is “open to hearing about additional exemptions.”

The Trump administration is weighing more exemptions from the new tariffs on Canada and Mexico — this time for the agriculture industry.

Amid deep concern from farm state lawmakers over the fallout for the U.S. agriculture sector, officials are discussing waiving the 25 percent duty on some agriculture products, including Canadian potash, a key ingredient in fertilizer, according to two people familiar with the conversations granted anonymity to discuss the ongoing deliberations.

Because you still want to put your anti trump blinders on pretending that the tariffs on Canada/Mexico are for that purpose.

Its ok - Eventually the TDS will wear....maybe

President Trump on Thursday said he will pause 25% tariffs on U.S. imports from Mexico that are covered under a 2020 trade agreement, delaying levies imposed on the nation and on Canada earlier this week.

Mr. Trump announced the delay in a social media post after a call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

"After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement," Mr. Trump wrote, referring to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. He characterized the move "as an accommodation" for the Mexican leader.

I always associated TDS with someone who bought into delusions like RUSSIA!

It's clear to me now that it's just anyone who disagrees with Trump.

I will admit I am completely confused what the strategy is... if it's to massively disrupt the us economy and hurt Americans business and consumers in order to get a few more border agents at the Canadian border... I find it to be frankly retarded

Its also associated with people who say "WHY HASN'T TRUMP ISSUED A PLAN ON THE DOE [conveniently timed with talking points on the RDS influencer community]!?!?!" despite evidence to the contrary.

ITs ok man - You'll recover eventually.

thanks I appreciate your well wishes.

in the meantime, you haven't cleared up why I suffer TDS bc I disagree with massively disrupting our economy, our businesses, and our people, to get a few more agents at the Canadian border... oh, and were gonna make a bunch of exceptions for people who ask nicely... and, if Tradau calls me, ill go ahead and delay them again for another month.

its just retarded

Oh no - Short term disruptions to an already ****ed up economy with the end result being a healthier one in the future.

Just remember these things 2 years from now when things are humming. Just like he did in his first term.

but what is the ****ing point of the "short term disruption"... what are we gonna gain here? bc I can tell you that a smart opponent would be able to capitalize on this pretty easily

if trump thinks the tariffs are great. then ****ing do them. let the market crash. let the economy suffer. and just reassure us all it will produce a golden age when we get those Canadian border agents

the daily flip flops and delays make him look like a fool

Mexico and Canadas governemtn will change behavior on key areas of security which is the very basic ask.

In the next 50 years the goal will be to make North America the manufacturing HUB of the world.
