2025 Around The League Thread

I read the total dollars wrong. Still, after taxes and deferred payments he’d been better off taking the Braves offer.

where are you seeing the overall dollars.. I have only seen the 5/140 was as high as the braves went. His agent countered with 6/160 something.. but the Braves never went that high.
I think he means actual dollars over the length of the deal, which is only 144 million. The rest of his money is deffered.

yeah, I didn't see any deferred initially... I wonder with so many players taking deferments, especially from the Dodger$, if there is some sort of investment plan, or inflation match on those dollars that makes it more lucrative. I can't imagine so many players deferring that much money knowing the depreciation of dollars now vs future due to inflation. there has to be something that makes it more appealing.

When you factor in California taxes and the deferrals, the Dodgers contract is significantly less.

There were a few news articles breaking it down at the time. Made it pretty clear.

The players union trying to get them the biggest number possible

And I said it up thread but there was local sentiment that the wife was trying to do some fashion branding out in California and didn’t want to do it in Atl

Yeah, I think Freddie is mostly at fault here for playing games and being a little bitch, but AA is not without blame either.

Mostly, I’m just tired of talking about it.
Have to factor in the reaction on this board at the time. I'm not sure anyone here expected he'd still be performing at this level at this age. In fact I'm pretty sure the general consensus is that first baseman age horribly. So hindsight is 20/20.

Which is why it didn’t make any sense to then turn around and sign another 1B with worse hit tools through the same age.

I would love if Freddie were still a Brave. But I'm glad we still have Olson and know he's an incredible player in his own right. It is what it is - let's all get over this four-year-old saga.

It's a stupid talking point. FF would still be a Brave if not for his agent being a sleezeball. Olson is a top 3 or so 1B, oh the horror.

The Olson hate is ridiculous. Peoples expectations were just wrong. He has almost as much WAR as a Brave than with Oakland already. He has always been up and down. We could have done much worse.

FF would still be a Brave... if he actually still wanted to be a Brave.

We've been through this a million times. AA tried to extent him many times before he hit the market. Chipper personally told FF several times, don't go to free agency because the temptation to leave is too strong. If anybody knows what that process was like, it was Chipper since he negotiated with his agent and JS/FW many times at the end of his career.

The Braves gave FF a 110 million dollar deal like in 2013 or 2014.

The agent is just the scapegoat. The agent didn't get blackballed, because ultimately he got FF the bigger overall deal, even if the deferment money doesn't make the value of the deal better than the one AA offered him.

It is stupid. Since joining the Braves Olson has a 133 WRC+ and been worth 13.2 fWAR which is 2nd most among 1B.

AA didn't choose Olson over Freeman. He chose Olson as the best option to replace Freeman because Freeman wasn't coming back.

Didn’t he fire the guy ?
And there’s no point.

Because by the time his next contract comes he’ll have been almost half a billion richer, and pushing 40 so he won’t need a new long term multi million dollar deal.

He’ll be at the age he can just negotiate by himself or get another agent to do a 1-2 year deal if he’s still productive at that age.

Firing his agent was just using him as a scapegoat and the agent hasn’t lost any clients. Other guys would see him getting Freddie a higher overall deal as a plus.

Braves fans on Twitter are idiots.

They still criticize AA for not bringing back Swanson on that atrocious deal. If what we offered Dansby was rumored to be real then I’m glad he turned it down.

I would take Arcia/Allen over the cost of Dansby. Because 9th hole guys who can play solid defense at short aren’t gonna be hurting us. Harris is gonna be hurting us if his offense never comes close to 22-23 production.

There is absolutely a point to firing him. Agents do more than just negotiate contracts within the sport. You don’t keep a guy you don’t trust as your agent.
