2025 Trade Deadline Thread

Going to the Rockies.

LHP Griffin Helling was the Yankees' 6th-round pick in 2024 out of LSU and currently in High-A. Yankees' 6th-ranked prospect with a 45 value.

RHP Josh Grosz was Yankees' 11th-round pick in 2023 out of East Carolina and is also pitching in High-A. He was the Yankees' 21st-ranked prospect with a 40 value.

Question for all of us is how does Ozuna measure up to McMahon in terms of value?

Depends on who's covering the salary I guess since McMahon is signed on for several more years. But a healthy Ozuna is the better player by a bit. McMahon is more comparable as the Nick Allen of 3B. He's a slick defender but never been anything but a below average hitter.

Ozuna's value is up in the air because who knows if he's healthy or not. But if he was I suspect he'd get a 45 FV player in return.

Yankees are picking up the entire salary. McMahon is signed through 2027. He's getting paid $12 MM this year and is scheduled to get $16 MM in 2026 and $16 MM in 2027. McMahon's offensive value appears to be almost exclusively in his power numbers. Going to a lower altitude may dull that some, but the current Yankee stadium (as in the case of the original) does favor LH power hitters although McMahon appears to spread the ball around.

I think the Braves locked themselves into a roster that was near the limit of their spending power and were fairly dependent on that roster staying healthy and performing.

They had pretty outrageously bad luck with that.

Whether they could have done better with marginal filler or not is probably besides the point. But sure they could have done better. But, it was a market with one team buying everything too.

But locking the team into the core may well have been the biggest miscalculation. But it's hard to really know in advance. And staying continuously on top for ten years is not really how these things usually work.

We got players that aren’t playing up to snuff and injuries- that’s sometimes how it breaks

Next year is make or break for a lot of them.

Last nights beat down needs to reinforce to get rid of some guys for long term pieces

The Stripers dude who claimed that AA talked a Devers-Ozuna/Murphy swap with Boston is saying Waldrep got scratched from his start and was told to throw a bullpen without being given an explanation. Maybe they just want him to start instead of Davis Daniel on Monday or maybe AA is going to flip Daniel for another piece of AAAA trash.

When he inherited the team, I thought Anthopoulos did a really good job of finding guys who would take short-term high AAV contracts to fill in around a decent core of players. That worked pretty well.

The approach changed after 2021 and he went big on the long-term deals and extensions (and again, some of those AAVs are well below market rate for the player). That has locked the team up and limited flexibility and if you are a franchise intent on staying below the luxury tax threshold, you are going to need some wiggle room in the event of injuries and subpar performance. Granted, the Braves have incurred a plethora of injuries, but there hasn't been a fallback for them because of the tightness of the payroll.

Or even someone like Grant Holmes who some pitching-needy team could overvalue and trade for. No, we have to get live photos of Grant Holmes in that race-car hat at Bristol next Saturday!
Grant is pretty valuable in that he's controllable and can start or be a high end bullpen piece. It takes 2 to tango. If nobody offers what we deem enough then can't fault them for not trading him for the sake of not trading him. Holmes next year I doubt is in the rotation but being in the bullpen and being a quality SP depth piece is really valuable.

Hopefully they've finally realized Waldrep isn't a starter and they are converting him to a reliever.

Or maybe Waldrep is being flipped in a bigger deal.

It was weird that he was pulled and not brought up. You would think he'd be called up to be around the guys some before starting. We'll see if he's in the dugout tonight

A team who just had the rotation decimated by injuries should not be dealing a top tier swing man option like Holmes. He is exactly the type of arm we’ve been criticizing AA for not acquiring, and he should be the 6th SP as long as he’s healthy.

The only player controlled past this year who should be available is Murphy, and that’s only if an equally impactful player for 2026 can be acquired. This teams goal is to compete in 2026, and creating additional holes on the 2026 roster is not going to help achieve that goal.

Also core players have sucked which is maybe worse than an injury.

I’m of the opinion that the Braves have enough back-end/mid-rotation pitching depth in the upper minors—plus I’m hoping for a top-end upgrade in FA—that Holmes should be on the table if the return is sufficient (ie, a lot more than a 40 FV lottery chip).
