2025-2026 offseason thread

Kenley Jansen settled for 1 year at 10 million and he's been consistently one of the best relievers in the game. Bummer is the definition of mediocrity. He wouldn't have gotten 9 million last off-season on a 1 year deal. This coming off-season, he would almost assuredly have to take a minor league deal if he were a FA.

Bummer is not a mediocre reliever and was coming off a 1.1 WAR season. He's had 5 full seasons (nobody counts 2020 and he was injured a lot of 2022) and has been worth 5.2 WAR in those seasons coming into this year. If he's only counting 6.5 against the luxury tax next year I'd say that's right at what you'd expect to get for someone like him on the open market.

The Braves do need a closer but they have several pieces already that can make up a good pen assuming we have a manager that knows what he's doing.

Speaking of Ozzie… is there some sort of machine or drill to teach him better pitch recognition and give him a shock if he swings at a bad pitch?😀

Make him spend the winter working on it two hours per day….

bWAR has him worth much less. He finished with an ERA over 6.79 in 2023 and somehow FG gave him an fWAR of .8? GTFO with that BS.

He's absolutely mediocre. And his fastball velocity is down below 92 MPH now. I don't really care if his tax hit was zero. We need to upgrade from Aaron Bummer.

It's 2025 and you still don't understand why era doesn't correlate to fwar?

Bummer was really good in the 2nd half of 2023 and all of 2024.

He’s also the most snake-bitten pitcher I’ve ever seen.

Bummer is the new Luke Jackson... always some reason why he sucks.. bad luck.. bad sequencing.. blah blah blah... the fact is, he stinks and gives up a ton of hits and runs.. find some analytical team that thinks they can fix him and move on from him.

I guess Ozuna did indeed exercise his veto clause.

Still doesn't explain why no other moves were made.
Nobody probably wanted Iggy and that sucks that Ozuna turned down the trades. The tweet that one Rangers guy made about getting excited was probably about Ozuna but he veto'd it. I'd bench his ass for the rest of the year.

I'm guessing JJ, Lopez, Holmes, Bummer, Lee, Johnson are the BP options right now for next year. That's a pretty strong bullpen. If we could add Devin Williams and replace Bummer with Chapman that would be a pretty nasty BP.

who is that guy and who is that guy that he quoted. Sorry, still not buying he veto'd any trades... if he did, then why reward him by letting him play almost everyday when just as good options exist on the club.

Yup. His BB Rate was 5.5 in 2023 with a WHIP of 1.50. Somehow people are surprised he had a 6.79 ERA when he gave up walk and a hit almost every inning.

still don't think you can count on JJ, Lopez or Holmes at this point. Holmes is rolling the dice that his tendon doesn't snap this off season.. JJ can't stand up yet.. and Lopez is not throwing from shoulder issues (last I heard at least)

I think WAR is a pretty sketchy thing to use for RPs.

Yeah sorry, Bummer was not good in 2023. Great k/9, terrible…everything else? K/9 down below 9 this year…he’d be lucky to get $5m on the open market. He’s not a high leverage guy and is declining. Unfortunately Atlanta will be stuck with him, but he’s a mop up bum.

Given a full offseason they should be fine and Lopez not starting should help but Holmes is the one I worry about bc it's a roll of the dice. We need 2 BP arms one being a closer, 2 SP, a new manager, SS, another good bat that can play OF and DH some and better depth. That's a pretty big list.

He’s the guy who broke the Chris Sale trade before anyone else.

And it’s clear that AA generally doesn’t interfere with lineup decisions. I don’t agree with it when your manager can barely write out the names on a lineup card, but that’s where we’re at. Also, I’m not sure the point in getting into a pissing contest with players on your roster in a lost season.

I can agree with the last part for sure.

Bummer is just having a bad year. It happens to relievers. Aside from the elite ones (who are usually closers), they are rarely great year in and year out. Everyone wanted Tanner Scott in the off-season, and he’s been horrible this year.

Point is, you can do a lot worse than Bummer as a mid to high leverage LHP for 9 million. Unless his stuff has just completely deteriorated over the last year, which is also certainly a possibility. His metrics this year don’t look good, for what that’s worth.

His stuff has eroded at least some. His fastballs are both down 2 mph this year and his breaking pitches have seen a modest drop in spin rate.

He's 31 which makes these drops being normal age related decline likely.

If Ozuna continues to hit well, would you re-sign him for 1 year and look to trade Murphy? Or can we not afford to carry a DH only hitter with the way this roster is constructed and Profar and Acuna needing to DH somewhat often?
