Costs increase after suppliers take brunt of it and companies take some as well.

Pretending this wasn't said up front is well a tactic.

This is going to be a push and go here - Demand will sink then prices will come down again. I know you want this to end ASAP because God forbid the American non-stem population had opportunities given back to them.

Where is the data supporting this suggestion that suppliers are taking the brunt of it?

Of course, the same factor is in play with immigration. I talked to a member of IBW recently who was complaining about immigrant welders with no credentials underbidding jobs.

My opinion on unions is a bit muddied, to be honest. I think it’s obvious that they improve conditions and compensation for workers overall in the long run, but I’ve found myself too disillusioned with their practices and overall efficacy. I’m not sure what the answer is, because I think a lack of unions will almost certainly result in bad outcomes, but I don’t find myself aligned with a lot of what they do.

The question on things like those immigrant welders is a very interesting one, though. If the immigrant welder can do the job effectively without the credentials, that might suggest we have over-regulated the industry. If they cannot, that’s not so much an immigration/union matter as it is a dumb consumer one, no?

I know the response is that they’ll make concessions on pricing to maintain the American business, but I’ve never understood how that is meant to work within the context of the actual transactions. Will foreign companies simply sell to us at a loss so that we don’t have a shortage?

That is what the idiots say. But there is no data suggesting this is happening outside of a very small percentage.

Imagine using that rationale for literally any other economic policy. “Foreign manufacturers will lower prices on exports to America to combat the new $15 minimum wage that is threatening to raise prices for American consumers and decrease demand for their products.”

I was told tariffs are being paid by China and Japan.

They are in fact not.

They are being paid by mom and dad who are spending $50 more for their kid’s Christmas present.

YOu were told specifically that the consumer will take the least amount of the cost and that is what has happened.

You are entitled to pretend otherwise.

How much is Japan is paying, how much is Sony paying?

I know mom and dad are paying 12.5% more for their kid’s Christmas present this year
