GDT 8-31: Waldrep on Sunday Night Baseball

I am in same boat as others.. I keep waiting on the real Waldrep to show up. It was like a switch was flipped to go to ace mode. This is very encouraging going into the next few years.. he will get better I assume.
The switch was sean Murphy telling him what pitches he needs to throw

It's a legit excuse...
there is more than that.. he just didn't start throwing strikes and getting quality outs because some meth head said throw a cutter.. I get that it was good for him, but there has to be more.. And it could be working with Meth that has brought him along. he maybe is learning sequencing from him and building confidence.

Correct. The addition of the cutter, sinker and curve represents 3 above average or better pitches to sequence with the split.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pitcher completely reinvent is repertoire over the course of a month and end up with 4 above average or better pitches. The league will obviously adjust to his stuff, but it’s reasonable to assume he will also improve his execution if these new pitches.

Waldrep looks as real as any young pitcher can look without an obvious wipeout pitch (strider fastball and fried curve as examples). He’s basically a poor man’s Schwelly with room to “learn how to pitch”, which for him starts with not throwing splits and cutters down the middle so often.

Waldrep is turning into an impact arm so Twit had to make sure he over extended him for no reason whatsoever.
eh.. I don't think 100 pitches is over doing it. Not sure his season high, nor if he is pushing high in innings pitched.. but him going out there close to the end of his night and still throwing quality pitches is encouraging.

even when he got hosed on "strike" one to Bohm.. he didn't get rattled.

I'm old enough to remember when Acuna was a threat at the plate.
he sucked coming back from the first knee.. expecting guys to be themselves after significant time out is dumb.. AA was dumb.. I want to see Strider/Acuna/Ozzie/Riley next year after a normal offseason... well I guess Riley won't..

Same reason I don't expect incredible things from Schwelly. Sure he will be good, but he might fade if he stays healthy next year.

But he was so dang good with his return this year. But he has been a completely different hitter after coming back again from the calf injury.

I think you will see spurts of old self.. but conditioning, training, timing.. all things that are hard to get back. I hope this isn't the version of Strider/Acuna we are seeing next year.

I don’t think you’ll see anything like that- I think - unless there’s other injuries - they should both be back to damn food- and especially Acuna.

It's an absolute anomaly why our "super star" is absolute dog shit in big spots and with RISP...it's very alarming.
