New Manager Discussion

Ross would have a good handle on using one catcher to catch and the other one that’s been hurt for three years to DH…. Just a thought….
Don't get me started on AA fucking up the chance to sell high on Murphy. If a catcher takes more than a handful of DH PAs in 2026, that means AA fucked up yet again.

Ozuna and Iglesias were bad but not selling high on an asset like Murphy was really bad.

I was driving that train most of the season. Especially once we lost Sale and Schwelly.

AA seems to like having two catchers.

Murph has had terrible luck with injury.

And Murph has been very good helping develop young guys. Waldrep couldn't give him enough credit.

Now is that worth the money Murphy will be getting? Who knows how AA spends this offseason.

I wonder if Murphy would have been able to pass a physical if we traded him. That's not to let Anthopolous off the hook -- by all accounts we didn't know about his hip injury until he revealed it late in the year, so that couldn't have been why we held on to him. But as a practical matter it's possible Murphy wasn't tradeable.

That's legitimate. But I also wonder how extensive the physical and overall medical checkup actually is? He says he's been dealing with this for like 4 years, but we didn't catch anything.

If you read the quotes in this article from when Ross was hired by the Cubs, it doesn't sound like he's necessarily someone who's embraced the modern game. Sure, this is 2019 and he surely could have grown since then.

And to being directed by upper management, Theo said: “If you want to hire a puppet, you don’t hire David Ross.” Theo gave an example of a young pitcher called up from the system and how he showed Ross the scouting reports, analytics, etc. on how they thought this pitcher would throw, but Ross gave serious pushback after catching him and telling Theo how he thought this pitcher would be more likely to succeed. (No, we don’t know who this pitcher was — no names were mentioned.) Theo’s conclusion: “He’s absolutely his own man. His teammates knew it, we knew it, and we are proud to partner with him. He’s not a yes-man.”

Chipper was on the radio show today. Said his family has given him the OK to go back to full time. He said he doesn’t want to be a manager (yet) but could be a hitting coach.

If that’s the case whomever AA hires as next manager better know AA is gonna have Chipper on staff regardless of who is at the top step of the dugout.

I hate that former players of that mold look at the Braves as an opportunity to come in and manage the old school style and not embrace analytics just because we’ve had Snit at the helm for a decade.

Definitely need to wash ourselves of that reputation.

Wash actually worked with the analytics team and pushed back when they were doing shifts because the analytics team said to position players here and there and Wash said he knows player A isn’t gonna get to that ball if positioned here. So they worked on position alignment. Now this was before the extreme shift was banned.

Hyers might as well start packing his things.
