2025-2026 offseason thread

Bowman tweeting that Kim is expected to decline his 26 option. I really hope AA is working out the extension. Otherwise, that was a waste of money that likely only served to bump us down the draft board.

Sale, strider, SS, and Waldrep are pretty much locks to start the season in the rotation. I'm not sold strider sticks, and God knows, sale will end up hurt, but I have a hard time seeing us selling 2 starting pitchers on signing. I think it's 1 starter and someone that AA identifies as a Lopez/king/holmes. Of course, he could trade for a starter to remove their choice
Waldrep will be in the rotation but why does it have to be on opening day?

Sign two pitchers and leverage these pitchers who have options to be quality depth when the inevitable injuries start occurring.

I think we need 1 MOR type of pitcher or better. With the depth we have on the roster and MLB ready prospects, we should be pretty good with that.

Focus the money on SS and OF and RPs.

Strider and SS are not locks. I wouldn’t be shocked if either had something done this offseason to fix another issue from injuries they had this year.

Well until we hear that they are, you can bet your house they will start the season as starters. I think it's 50/50 strider ends the season as a starter even if he's healthy

SS is getting concerning to me. The 2 guys available will almost certainly get deals that AA isn't comfortable doing. If Allen is our starting SS again, Kyle Tucker better be a brave

Pickens are slim. Red Sox might be convinced to deal Marcelo Mayer if they resign Bregman and Story doesnt opt out. They reportedly want to dump Yoshida who is due 18 million each of the next 2 years. I recall Didier Fuentes was in the rumored Devers deal so maybe we could work something out there. I like Fuentes and dont want to trade him but might be worth it. Yoshida could be a decent LH bat despite being overpaid and unlike Ozuna can atleast play Soler level defense in the outfield.

Maybe decline because he is resigning. Who knows. But I don’t feel like it was a waste. If nothing else it showed the dummies running this org that actual real players are important.

I hated losing that position as much as the next person. But I am not mad at the Kim deal because of it.

Unless Kim just somehow really loved it here, I don't think Boras is going to be letting him sign an extension before free agency - unless AA is totally in love with him and decides this is the free agent he's going to way overpay for.

Nobody would give Kim more than 3 years imo. Boras will hold out for 4-5 but nobody will bite. I know Whetherholt is probably off limits with the Cards but he's the exact type of player we need. Hes the type of player I offer Caminiti for.

You’re not wrong, but in the case of the Braves we are entering next season with our top 5 starting pitchers being higher than expected injury risks

Sale - Mid 30’s. Your guess is as good as mine what ailment will cause him to miss time
Strider - Multiple arm injuries. Days as a TOR may be over
Schwelly - His arm literally exploded
Lopez - Shoulder. Likely needs to back to the pen
Holmes - High likelihood to need Tommy John

Waldrep, Elder, Ritchie are nice depth, but the risk profile requires at least 2-3 high quality options, including someone you could trust to start a playoff game.
Once again you are 100% exactly correct.

Pitchers are always risky, but these pitchers are particularly risky. And they were all risky last off season as well, when AA decided to do nothing about it.

The fact all the risky pitchers got hurt does not excuse acquiring zero quality depth, and the same will be true this off season. In fact, it’s even more true this time because these pitchers are somehow even MORE risky than they were last year.

I don't see AA making the same mistake this offseason. Whatever SP he goes after shouldn't have much of an injury history either.

Anything more than "absolutely nothing" like last offseason would be a very good start. So let's wait for that step to be taken, and talk about further moves once AA literally does anything to address the rotation.

Even one addition of a MLB caliber SP will be a massive help compared to last year. Literally...one. Just one (1) single addition. One...that's how low the bar is right now. One.

so what do you think would be an appropriate offseason as far as injury proofing the rotation?

Here are our current SP options (not counting retreads like Wiles or Daniel)

Sale
Schwelly
Strider
Waldrep
Lopez
Holmes
Elder (boo)
Ritchie
Fuentes
Burkhalter
Braun

That is decent depth, but with a bunch of injury risks at the top and experience risks at the bottom.

Ideally, we add someone like Cease. But if not Cease (or some other top pitcher like Cease), than maybe someone that can be a MOR type, like Zac Gallen or Merrill Kelly.

And then maybe add different retreads for extra depth, rather than for sure duds like Wiles or Daniel. Maybe a retread who has actually had major league success that we could bring in on a minor league deal and stash in AAA for a couple of months. Someone like Marcus Stroman.

You’re more exhausting than my wife.

You’re right, but still exhausting 🤣
