It can always be argued as a combination, no disagreement there. But I agree with Smoltz on the main reasons (including how they push them as kids these days).

The latter may be apart of it. But pitchers in the past went 9 all the time and pitched 250 innings all the time. Teams have been extra careful the last few years of over working guys early and slowly increasing their work load each year. It hasn't mattered. They are still getting hurt. I think mechanics are the main culprit 9 times out of 10. And it's pretty easy to see too. Someone in the spring predicted Fernandez going down because he changed his mechanics this spring. Same with Harvey too when he was in the minors.

Cliff Lee has flawless mechanics and he has to get an MRI on his elbow.

If he gets TJ, you can throw anything you say about it out the window.

I've been rolling around the idea of max effort, year 'round teenage pitching as a major contributor. I'm just not sure if TJ can be avoided with flawless mechanics.

I've been rolling around the idea of max effort, year 'round teenage pitching as a major contributor. I'm just not sure if TJ can be avoided with flawless mechanics.

It certainly helps. Lee is also 35 and has pitched a long time. There is a bit of a difference in that and having your elbow go out in your mid 30s and getting it done when before age 25. Some people may be destined for TJ regardless. But bad mechanics is a death sentence.
