Movie Thread

I feel so sad that he passed. He was a legend, his run from Stand By Me to a Few GOod Men is as good of a run as any director producing critical darlings as well as classics and box office successes.

He's responsible for my all time favorite movie, The Princess Bride. It's an absolutely perfect film.
I mean I largely agree but for me it's This is Spinal Tap. Which I know is a silly film for an all time favorite but it's light enough to watch no matter th emood, it's duration is perfect, and it's so fucking quotable.

Saw Hamnet last week and rented Bugonia on Saturday. Hamnet is long and slow, but beautifully shot and wonderfully acted by Jessie Buckely and Paul Mescal (especially Buckley). I've seen reviewers compare it to some of Terrence Malick's work and its an apt comparison. It will receive nominations in most of the major categories, but I only see Buckley winning. She is superb.

Bugonia is the worst--by far--feature length film by Lanthimos. Like most of his work, it goes down a few rabbit holes but it tips its hand about halfway through and then its a trudge to the end. Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons do well. As this generation's Meryl Streep, Stone will likely be nominated for Best Actress whether she deserves it or not. I don't think Streep should have been nominated just because "a dingo at my baby" and I feel the same about Stone here.

Damn, sadly Rob Reiner is dead, seems to be murdered. Sad, just saw Spinal Tap II last month
Unbelievably sad. The thing that amazes me about Reiner is the wide range of his oeuvre. He delivered so many different styles from madcap comedies to heavy dramas. He'll be missed.

HBO has a 2 part documentary on Mel Brooks called Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man. Fucking hell it hits hard. Mel Brooks is a fucking legend and he still has it. Every show should be required to have him on as a guest show the world that funny is funny.

Saw project hail Mary. It's fine. I think I've been spoiled with interstellar and arrival and I'm guilty of comparing it to those films. But it's a fine movie. Gosling did a good job. It's a good popcorn film.

Project Hail Mary is fantastic if you don't compare it to Interstellar.

I'm a sucker for films like these and Arrival and I loved Martian.

Gonna rewatch it sometime this week.

I mean you're not wrong. I think I fell into the trap of reading some hype online and probably hyped it in my head a bit too much.

I liked all the movies listed. Martian is my least favorite of Interstellar, Arrival, and itself. I may like this more than the Martian in some ways. I'll have to see them both agian.

I've watched the martian too much because it's been re-runned to death on FX and TNT. Edited for TV so it's sped up and cut to fit the tv time slot.

I watched it again in full on home media in 4k from start to finish and enjoyed it more.

PHM had a long run time of 2:45, but to me it flew by and was intriguing from beginning to end. The flashbacks helped the pacing. And this movie is proof that practical effects/puppetry with some CGI to supplement is much better than full CGI. Because Rocky never took me out of the scenes. It looked natural.

I haven't watched a movie on TV loose like that in ages. Unless you count A Christmas Story on TNT/TBS.

Martian is a solid movie, I really enjoyed it. I haven't gone back to it like Interstellar and Arrival.

But yeah, it was a solid movie. I probably came in a little blasé. It's worth a viewing. I probably won't go back to see it personally but may catch it on streaming later. But it did make me want to watch Interstellar because around that same time my Reddit algorithm kept throwing me Jessica Chastain content and like every 4th one was Interstellar.
