GDT 4/1: Sale - Business Man’s Special

The whole leverage thing seems to baffle this org. for instance, top of the 7th, Braves down by 1 run is a higher leverage situation than top of the 7th and Braves are up by 4. But we all know that down by 1 means the Braves are throwing Bido or Kinley. But if you look at the odds, the Braves have better odds at winning that game versus the Braves losing the game up by 4. Luckily, none of the higher leverage guys threw a ton of pitches and hopefully it won't bite us in the Zona series.

Again, by itself it's completely defendable. Even a handful of times throughout the year. But it's the first week of the season and he's done it twice. You can't bring Suarez into the game every time we have a 4 run lead late in the game, or we're gonna overuse him. Work load management is one of the the primary issues we saw with Snit. I'd like to see Weiss use better judgement going forward.

Wasn’t it just a couple days ago I said it was stupid to use Suarez and you idiots all mocked me for making a “big deal” over it? Or was I “getting worked up”? I can’t remember.

Should I go back and post a few quotes?

Weiss may be emphasizing the start of the season as "extended" higher level situations due to the wounded nature of the starting pitching staff. He may be looking and saying, once I get my starters back, I'll be able to mix and match with the pen better without the need for the higher leverage guys "as much" but for now, if I have a lead, given the relative garbage rotation, the games that can be won are relatively more important than the games that can be won 2-3 months from now when the rotation is theoretically back to full pool.

I think it was more that he was already warmed and ready when the Braves added on. Not that I agree with that, but at least there is a logical explanation. yesterday was twit jr just slamming the door on game 7 of the WS on the 5th game of the season.

Let’s be honest, this rotation will never fully be healthy so it’s a futile practice to strategize around it.

I agree, you have to win the games you can win. But there is something called leverage and using the best relievers when leverage is not as high is not optimal use of arms regardless of what might have in the future. It really shouldn't be that hard. Like some data nerd could easily print and win% card for almost every situation and then group them in leverage quadrants. That is at least a starting point for usage. Then inning/part of the order/availability/and handedness are nuisance that can be discussed on a game by game basis. I hope that twit Jr using Suarez for the heart of the order, he understands that aspect of leverage at least.

Did you actually read my post? Here let me help:

what about 3 of the highest leverage relievers all getting into a non save game?

And? It was a day game with a west coast the next day. Little bit of a different situation than a burning those 3 in a night game with a noon game the following day. Also Iggy has pithed 2 games so far this season. Every armchair manager somehow knows the optimal way to use a bullpen while no manager in baseball does.

Then use Iggy.. using one high leverage reliever to protect a 4 run lead with 3 innings to go is not near as dumb as using all 3 of your high leverage relievers to protect a 4 run lead with 3 innings to go.. then 2 innings to go.. then 1 inning to go. regardless of the hours you want to count between games.. innings are going to accumulate if you do stupid things like that and guys you want to count on wont be available when you really need them for a higher leverage situation.

Not to alarm you but both Iggy and Suarez are going to pitch around 70 innings this year. It's going to be fine. Really needing your high leverage guys multiple games in a row in the regular season rarely happens.

Johnny Venters is on line two….. 😂😂😂😂

And your point is spot on- it rarely happens, and shouldn’t

This. I am all for winning games that are winnable. But you have 8-9 pen guys for a reason. Kinley and Bummer are not complete bums and should be able to hold a lead. And using 1 of the top relievers in a 4 run lead is fine. But burning through all three. That is crazy in my book. If you only have 3 guys you trust to hold a 4 run lead for an inning then your pen is a problem.
It's only an issue when the player actually gets overused.

So far it's hypothetical.
