Braves Draft Pick Thread

I really like the Sobotka pick. Watching video on this kid, it's easy to see why he was once considered 1st round talent. Very easy gas. Doesn't overthrow. Nice mechanics. And some very hard bite on his breaking stuff. Hope he comes back completely healthy and has no lingering effects from the back surgery.

The paucity of high school pitchers in our recent drafts really flies in the face of what has been a great history with those sorts of pitchers. Think about the names over the years. Avery, Mercker, Glavine, Smoltz (we didn't draft him, but he spent several years in our minor league system), Pete Smith (traded for like Smoltz), Tommy Greene, Schmidt, Wohlers, Millwood, Wainwright. Those guys more than make up for the busts. Some of them were dominant. Some were very good over a long period.

Not all of them were first rounders either. Glavine, Smoltz, Schmidt, Wohlers and Millwood were not first rounders.

Smoltz is a bit of a different draft animal. The Tigers had to buy him out of a basketball scholarship offer from Michigan State, which is why he was a late draft pick.

I seem to remember that Jason Schmidt was also considered a bit of a tough sign, but in those days, the Braves really went for the guys they wanted and they had the budget to do it.

Great list. Braves cleaned up in the late-1980s to the mid-1990s drafting high school pitchers and I was a fan of that strategy.

I thought they'd go heavier on pitching. I think Davidson is the real deal. Curcio looks like Frank Wren, Jr., Jr. I have no idea on Edgerton and Tellor. I think they'll try to sign Dykstra and I think he's probably a better than average prospect.

I like the Fulenchek pick and I think Diaz could move fast. Povse, Sobotka, and Roney all have upside as relievers. They just need to get healthy and/or more experienced.

If he's healthy Sobotka is starter material.

Just to clarify, Smoltz was in the Braves' minor league system one year and about two weeks.

Here's a great oddity: Smoltz pitched for the Greenville (SC) franchise in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2008 -- all while rehabbing. His record? 10 games, eight starts, 0-1 record, allowing seven earned runs in 32 innings: a 1.97 ERA!

I'm hoping for Parkview HS RF Isiah Gilliam or S. Gwinnett HS SS/3B Montrell Marshall early today.

And of course the Reds pick Marshall shortly after our pick of Gamez.

We have a complete death of 3rd base talent in our system, there is really good local kid with big talent who is a 3rd baseman available to us, but instead we pass for another pitcher.

Can't find anything on Gamez.

Reds may have saved enough from their bonus pool in the first ten rounds to put a serious offer together for Marshall.

I don't get all the new rules, but I do know that drafting/signing Marshall would have absorbed a lot of the bonus pool if we had drafted him earlier, which would have forced the Braves to low ball throughout the rest of the first ten rounds. Have to remember that the mlb draft is about both quality and quantity and I think the shape the system is in requires us to build up depth.

Another kid who hasn't turned 18 yet. Might be a similar situation to our #11 pick last year, Alec Grosser, another HS pitcher that we paid third or fourth round money to.

We couldn't afford him probably. It's hard to get mad about much this far into the draft, IMO... There are usually tons of guys you've never heard of at this point and a lot of times they end up decent prospects.

Can't find anything on #12 Patrick Dorrian either. Braves have gone way off the radar these last two rounds.

Edit: Here's a little blurb on Dorrian from this year's UnderArmour tournament:

Patrick Dorrian | SS | Kingston, NY | Kingston

Strong, athletic infielder with a quick bat from the LH side. Swing has good plane and he shows a mature middle-of-the-field approach. Has a knack for the barrel. Defensively, he is aggressive and takes good routes finishing plays with an accurate arm.

Patrick Dorian is our #12 pick, another HS player not yet 18. I like seeing these high schoolers being taken.

Difference is Grosser was on a lot of folks radar. I'll look for more on Gamez, but he's not listed on either of the prospect services.
