GDT #95: July 13, 2014 Braves (Teheran) @ Cubs (Not Our Wood) 2:20 EST

What's CJ hitting? .215? .162? What'd he hit last year? .179? .184?

I get tired of the selected whipping boy crap we do on this board.

Look, the guy is still sporting just a .676 OPS. 95 Ks and 10 BBs. Even in his "good" month, in June, he hit .327, but with a .754 OPS. 27 Ks and 2 BBs. Before today he was hitting .200 this month. All of this with less-than-stellar defense. I don't think it's too crazy to be down on him.

Pretty much. He has a lot of work to do before 2014 is considered a good season.

He hit .300 with a like a .350 OBP during June. I guess those are awful numbers.

He hit .327 with a .345 OBP. But a .754 OPS. .427 BABIP. 27 Ks, 2 BBs. .082 ISO. In his best month he was the 8th-10th best 3B in the NL based on a lot of numbers.

CJ's gotta go to make room for Peraza.

Peraza
TLS
JUpton
Freeman
Gattis
Heyward
Simmons
Pitcher
BJ

I like it!

If there's a better player, fine. Don't make him out to be a one-armed palsy. He's not. He finished second in the NL in hitting last year and he's had a tough year this year and is hitting .276. He had a bad two months but he's coming out of it. All the guy does is hit line drives. As a complementary piece, I'll take it.

If this was Upton or Freeman you'd say something like, "ooohhh, when he gets hot, he can carry a ballclub." Sound about right?

I think if the score doesnt get closer I would pull Teheran after the 5th. I want Teheran starting the first game back. It would still be normal rest for him.

I expect him to improve on his hitting from earlier in the year because it was terrible. How much, I don't know. Any improvement will be nice. But he's not a great player, and it's questionable whether or not he's even good.

This is not true in 2013 and won't be true in 2014. He had a tough stretch. He's coming out of it.

How about enjoying him pounding the crap out of the ball after we have 1 homer in 411 at bats?

Freeman and Upton are much, much, much better players and it isn't close. That's why people say that. His .276 average is pretty empty. .276 is fine if you can hit for power and/or take some walks. Not so exciting when you don't do either.

I'm enjoying it for sure. But I still have my doubts about him as a player. 95 Ks and 10 BBs is terrible.
Before today he was hitting .200 this month. His .327 average last month was about as empty as they come. I'm far from a hater when it comes to the Braves. But looking at numbers, I'm far from impressed with him.

Seriously?

He's a good player. Stop overstating things. Everybody's not awesome or suckage. Some players are good. CJ is good. And you need a few guys in your lineup who aren't superstars so you can afford to pay everybody.

Hard for me to understand why this is even in question.

There are plenty of guys in this lineup who have underperformed what we'd hoped for offensively, and by a far wider margin than this guy.

He's been far from good so far this year. He's had two good games which is great. He's shown very few signs of being a good hitter this year. Factor in his below average defense, and "good player" becomes questionable. You're ignoring a lot of numbers. Two good games mean little. Again, even in his "good" month he was average at best.

His defense is fine. He's short on range, but he's a third baseman. It's a reaction position. Range doesn't make as much difference as it does up the middle.

I'd pull Julio after this inning.

Varvs for 2, Carp, and someone not named Simmons/Walden/Kimbrel is enough to hold this game.
