Offseason/ 2015 season

People that say Braves don't fire managers..........based on what?

Bobby Cox was rightfully here for a million years, how do you know how management will handle incompetent coaching?

I wonder how much Frank Wren is kicking himself for the Chris Johnson extension. So stupid

Eh, the money was very little. I doubt it becomes an issue for the Braves. I'm sure he could move a 5 million dollar contract.

The good thing is that I think this team becomes better if we keep much of this core together next year as well, maybe even get Chipper around the guys. I stick by the reasoning for this team's incredible struggles being related to lack of leadership.

But I think we need too:

1. Resign Bonafacio as a solid ulitity guy to not over take over for guys who get off days but to solidify our awful bench.

2. Get rid of BJ. I know how much money he's owed, but he's absolutely killing this team. Whether it's with his bat, his attitude or his lack of hustle. He's just hurting us.

3. Bring up Peraza to play OF. Let him work out in the outfield to see what we can get out of him. If he's efficient enough, put him in left, Jason in center and Justin in right. Peraza can give us a very solid leadoff guy that'll keep the lineup balanced as well.

4. It's been said, but we need to offer the QO to Santana and see if we can keep him. I love seeing Teheran/Wood/Santana...

5. Sign another quality arm because we can't expect that Meds comes back and is the guy who had a 3.13 ERA last year. If Meds does work out, then we'd have Teheran, Wood, Santana, Minor, Medlen and that's solid.

6. LH reliever and a few more bench pieces. I'd look into 3B to see what we can get. Someone mentioned Headley, I'd look there... maybe even Ramirez?

7. Don't ever bring up trading Simmons or Kimbrel again. These last fews games have shown me just how important Simmons is to us. He's just not replaceable... even with his offense sucking. And for Kimbrel, he's just too dominant. He makes mistakes, but he's by far the best closer in the game, so please stop.

8. This is a good team without any leadership and little to no direction. They're pretty much just kids still... you've got to be patient.

9. I'd keep Gattis at Catcher. Bethancourt will be much better defensively, but this is only Gattis' first full professional year at catcher. It's not exactly an easy position... give the guy some time. lol

Maybe we'll be lucky to see something more like this next year:
1. Peraza LF (R)
2. La Stella 2B (L) (I have an incredible amount of faith in him)
3. Freeman 1B (L)
4. JUP RF (R)
5. Heyward CF (L)
6. Gattis (R) Catcher
7. Chris Johnson (R) 3B
8. Simmons SS (R)
9. Teheran/Wood/Santana/Minor/Meds-FA

Disagree- and I thought the contract was for about $8M annually?

No team wants a no power poor fielding 3rd basemen.

Some of it was buying out arbitration years 15:$6M, 16:7.5M, 17:$9M, 18:$10M club option ($1M buyout). That is from Cots contracts.

Glavine at this stage had a cy young award and finished 2nd at age 26.

Mike Minor has had 103 MLB starts. At the same point of Galvines career (age 24 granted) he was having the same struggles.

Lending fodder (true or not) to the adage that it takes LH pitchers longer to develop

"you can look it up"

Age is far more important than number of starts.

I think it's a given that Peraza will be in Atlanta at some point in 2015, but probably not to start the year. Whether he is playing 3B, CF, or (in case of injury) SS or 2B is the only real question.

BJ is still a good defensive OFer and a good baserunner. He will never be cut loose because it will always be better to pay him to be the 4th/5th OFer rather than pay him not to play at all. He may be the most expensive 5th OFer in the game, but he isn't going anywhere.

Wren should spend every day in the offseason figuring out how to get rid of BJ. That's first. Then, even if it isn't their fault, make a change at hitting coach (hopefully Chipper, but won't hold my breath). See what you can possibly get for Chris Johnson. Figure out what you're going to do about Gattis/Bethancourt. See if we can get a real ace pitcher in here to couple with Teheran. Build the bullpen back up. Work toward locking Heyward up or trade him. And find some leaders, some veteran guys who will lead this team.

But the first priority has to be getting our garbage CF out of the everyday lineup.

I'd fully agree if we were talking women or whiskey.
My experience is an older woman knows what she wants out of life and has skills to bring the best out of others. Both older and younger.
With that in mind, any suggestions for next years "bench" coach ???

I think that's right. It doesn't make sense to pair up a valuable asset like Gattis or Minor to get rid of BJ and his contract. The right approach with him is to hope he gets hot for a couple months at some point and dump him then.

How is that a stupid extension? Its cheaper than what he'd make in arbitration.

BC he's a terrible player and we're now contractually obligated to him for 3 years. We could've dumped him after this season and replaced him with someone good or Peraza.

Given that the situation in center (and maybe third too) has a viable internal solution, the main issue this off-season will be finding a couple starters.

I think Santana will leave. We'll probably make a qualifying offer, but he'll get more money elsewhere. Teheran, Wood and Minor return. That leaves two openings to fill. One will probably be a cheap fifth starter type (in the mold of Harang but probably not as massive). The other will be a better pitcher and I suspect he will be acquired via trade. I think the team will also try to bring Medlen back on the cheap. Given this is TJ #2 for him, chances are it will take longer than the usual 12 month recovery. I think he will be signed as depth (sort of the way Floyd was signed as someone who maybe would be ready in May and could step in for another starter who got hurt or developed problems).

It is interesting to speculate who our main trade chip would be to try and get a pitcher. I think Bethancourt could be the guy.
