The city of Ferguson showed me their true colors last night. Whether they were dressed in suits or saggy pants...I felt welcome. I was met with zero violence. Loudspeakers were used to express concern, but they were also used to promote calm.
There's a few groups that are taking advantage of a volatile situation for their own personal gain or agenda. A few very small groups. Other than that... I felt safe.
I spoke with many people. I was often the only white person around. I wasn't bothered by that. You put your arm around a man no matter what color he is and you have a friend. I did that numerous times last night.
I was never met with hostility. The police department asked for order and they got order. A handful of groups decided to end the silence. They decided to end order. They threw bottles and rocks at the officers, black and white, male and female officers, and that's when the police asked the group not to throw anything else.
Those warnings fell on deaf ear's. The police asked the media to separate themselves from the protesters. We took up positions behind officer's and that's when the police deployed smoke canisters. The smoke canisters were not effective in getting the crowd to disburse and the bottles and rocks continued to fly towards police. That's when the tear gas was used.
In the middle of coughing and flushing my eye's from tear gas is when the live gunfire came towards us. I counted 14 original shots and a few more after my camera's internal microphone was out of listening reach. If the bullets never flew...I'd definitely go back tonight.
The great citizens of Ferguson are trying to hold a rally. They're protesting legally and mostly peacefully. Opportunists are turning things on end.
I went into Ferguson looking for the end of the world, lawlessness and insanity. I left Ferguson with the overwhelming feeling of hope for that city. An overwhelming feeling of compassion for her citizens and maybe even a few new friend's.
Ferguson is not lost. Not yet. We have to single out the bad apples and remove them from the situation. End of story.
