Around Baseball

Nats up 1-0 and could extend their winning streak to 9 games. Good to see they are peaking too soon. A slump towards the end of the year and playoffs is inevitable.

Triple play on Puig. He wasn't even running hard.

Started seeing speculation that the red Sox will go after Heywood. They have good prospects close to ready contribute. Jackie Bradley is Andrelton in cf and BJ at the plate. I know some here wanted to go after Mookie Betts. I like Henry Owens and he could fill a rotation spot.

I would ask for Betts, Owens, Barnes, and Cecchini. That's number 1,3,11 and 12 on their prospect list.

I'd make that deal. Doubt the Red Sox would though.

I am personally not that impressed with the Sox prospects. I really like Henry Owens, Betts I am not the highest on but we desperately need a center fielder. Cecchini I liked a lot going into the year so buying low on him. I might still make that deal without Barnes but I think he has a good chance to be a major leaguer.

I think a deal could expand to include Gattis too. With a small left field they could hide him there as well as a few starts at catcher and occasional DH until Ortiz is gone.

What is not to like about Betts? Guy absolutely destroyed the minor leagues at young ages and can play multiple positions.

His outfield defense has rated very badly so far and I think he will only be a slightly above average offensive player. Not saying I wouldn't take him but I don't see him as an all star talent.

J Schaefer is going off

.323 and already at 10 SB.

Schafer is playing at the top of his game in Minnesota (which I always thought was a perfect destination for him) and I expect he will fall off, but I think he is showing what he can do when he is used wisely. Gardenhire, and Tom Kelly before him, for all their foibles seem to get the most out of guys like Schafer. He could turn out to be a nice "AL" player where he can rotate in at the bottom of the batting order and provide some speed and decent on-base skills when he isn't expected to do too much. His ceiling is likely 4th OF, but he could be a place-holder for a couple of years in Minnesota.

One of the puzzling things about Gonzalez this year to last is his use of the bench early in the season. Last season, he used Pena and Schafer a lot early and both played well until suffering injuries. This year, he hardly used the bench at all. I don't think Schafer (at least at this point in his career) is a guy who can play well on a yo-yo.

Started by our old friend Cory Rasmus. Amazing how well he is doing after so many injury plagued years at the low minors. Wish we had him back.

Bet Oakland wishes it had Cespedes back a little bit. Despite our inability to step up and win a game when we have a chance to get into one of the WC spots, there are going to be some great races down the stretch in this final month.
